Okay so I have this notorious thing called OCD.

    That's the premise.

My M17x is essentially running flawlessly. But I do have a minor gripe, I wonder if anyone else has noticed this.

Akin to the psycho flickering we all experienced before the A02 bios, I notice, now and again, a single streak, usually on the right side of the screen (in fact it may always be on that side) during such activities as: changing the volume, watching a video, playing a game.

Its very random and uncommon. It might happen twice in an hour or once a day. For all I know, it could be a sane false simulation (hallucination). That's how sporadic and brief it is.

windows 7 ultimate x64. 10.3 mobility drivers (not mobility modded). graphics cards are not being overclocked. processor is at +5%. I've never noticed it when the processor as not being overclocked, but why should overclocking the processor cause this behavior if they supposedly fixed it?

I think joker mentioned something about slight flickering when overclocked. But you say it can happen even when there is no stress on the system so that's weird

have you check your catalyst control center.

    step by step
    Graphics
    information center
    Graphics hardware
    System information.

Then look at system summary and see if there any thing in conflicts/sharing, Forced hardware, Problem Devices, Windows error Reporting and see if anything showing up.

    nothing under problem devices

windows error reporting is full of fault buckets:

oh no. I said I *never* noticed it happening when the processor isn't overclocked.

I had the same issue. Each one that shows up is a error. I will show you my last 2 errors when crysis crashed. By scanning it the frist part of Windows error reporting. The application Hang. Scanning you can see what application that it happen to. Then go to the game manufacture. They will ask you to do a DXDiag Which you will go to and the search bar at the bottem. type in dxdiag and you will have to copy it and post it to the tech forum on the game. Like I did here http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/403977.page. They will tell you if it the software or there game and mybe show you a fix.

no no, i meant that it happens even when you're watching a movie (video cards are not under stress).

would you mind doing the following :

    start run : eventvwr
go to Windows Logs, System, right click and choose Save All Events As
Save as evtx file and post it here..

I've now noticed the minor flickering with the overclocking of the processor disabled (not even at 1%).

I've tried recording it with my digital camera, but since it literally only happens for one single frame, the camera doesn't see it. I fear i would need a camera that records 60 frames per second at least (because that's the best the human eye can see).

while watching a video. (at world's end bluray rip)

I'm not supporting piracy because I own this movie on bluray and downloading a copy of it for backup purposes is legal.

Are people noticing this or not? I was just watching a 10 minute youtube video and it happened like 4 times... I really need to find out more about this.

Its a simple matter: either something is wrong with my graphics cards (or motherboard or cpu) or people with the 920xm and dual 4870's with crossfire aren't noticing this subtle distortion that is happening to all of us.

    GPU fault i think.

OFF-TOPIC; Did you ever get 10.3 working? I did. But the sacrifice to get it working is being suck on CCC 9.7 not the 2010 version. (Doubt there is a difference anyway.)

Zenith I can attest only to my own experience and I have never seen something like that but I am on a 820qm I am sure though that you would see people complaining about it if wasn't an isolated case. I'd contact Dell for replacement video cards.

I'm wonder if that the flickering is always on the right side of the screen is any indicator of the problem?

My M17X has what I call noise flickering, and yeah I have OCD too and this thing really kills the mood of having such a kickbutt lappy.
theres like this super high pitch electrical chirping thats always on and is like a high frequency, its not the fan as its super quiet, its just like when your in a quiet room typing up a word doc, its the most annoying thing ever.
btw I have my CPU overclocked and just my discrete SLI enabled....

any ideas? Would be VERY much appreciated.

my two sense on your issue sumkallmetim is that all high end gaming notebooks have this sound. I've gone through the xps m1730 with dual 8800gtx in sli, a sager with a single 9800gt and this m17x (one with 280's in sli and now my current one with 4870's in crossfire) and I've heard this high pitched electrical sound in all of them.

Why it happens I do not know, but i do think it is universal. it may be related to the fact that if you plug in your headphones and don't play any sounds or music, and list for something, you will hear a low buzzing sound (unless ur headphones run through USB).

The thing is, I won't have ANYTHING plugged into it, and it will still make this noise. I haven't heard anybody else ever complain or mention this, so I think my ears might just be sensative to the frequency or something. I have no idea, but it constantly bugs me and really just forces me to use my M11X for my trivial homework assignments and readings. Oh well.....

there are tons of threads here with this problem described, just search for cpu whine. it's either the CPU or GPU that are making this noise.
