Hey all,
I realize there's an overclocking thread already but I'm having issues with other stuff as well. So I bought a cryo lx laptop cooler from NCIX the other day because I've heard it's better to have your laptop on it when overclocking.
fair enough.
Well I overclocked my T9600 to a stable 3.25ghz and everything is running awesome, crysis warhead is playing smooth as butter and my cpu temps are nice. I turn the laptop off for the night and turn it back on the next morning and bam. I get a USB over current error screen upon boot-up.
Then i smell burning components. And figure it has to be the damn Cryo cooler. Has anyone heard of this happening? Any idea as to why it happened? I'm sending it back for a refund obviously and going to try a new one.
My second problem is i notice that when I overclock my cpu, my fans no longer kick in when I'm playing video games. IE, my gpu's (sli 280 gtx) gets up to 85 Celcius and i don't hear the fans blasting like they usually would if my cpu was at default clocks.
Any idea what the deal could be with the fans when I OC? Any advice on the Cryo LX cooler? What did that error code mean exactly?
thanks alot guys

I've no idea why the fans might not be kicking in, but 85C can still be regarded as safe. It's not comfortable, but it's still safe, at least provided the GPUs aren't prone to burning out like the 8000 series were. So you can still use it until you fix the issue, provided that it doesn't get any hotter. I can recommend that until you can fix the issue that you use the 9400M instead.
The USB issue most likely does have something related to a USB connected device. If no other device was connected, then it was probably the Cryo. You do have the Cryo plugged into the mains as well don't you, not just USB? Does it boot up if you remove the Cryo, and not if you plug it in?
I'd recommend using it at stock clocks until you can fix the issue. Honestly, you will recieve little benefit from overclocking that bit extra-it's still extra performance provided there's no issues, but not necessary. It only usually provides useful when there is a game or application bottlenecked at stock clocks. -
Yea when I set everything to stock clocks, my fans run perfect. The Cryo is getting sent back because something definitely fried in it. Smells awful.
For normal everyday applications stock clocks are fine, I agree with you Evil. However the difference in stock clock performance to overclock (3.2ghz) for a game like crysis warhead is amazing. It runs so much smoother.
and the fact is that the OC is stable (checked via OCCT), but the fans don't kick in for the gpus. Oh and the laptop cooler was running usb to usb (to get computer infomation) and usb to dc (for power). -
Is it the cpu or gpu fan that makes the loudest noise? I always find after 5 mins the full noise will kick in. Was wondering if it was overkill because it sounds really really loud and my cpu only gets to max 60c at load and the gpu 65 or so. I can't seem to be able to edit fan settings in riva-tuner though.

the loudest i believe would be the gpu fans. They are supposed to kick in at different stages of RPMs depending on the gpu temps. They are not doing that when I have the cooling pad plugged in and working and when I OC my cpu.

The burning compontents that you smell is probably the fried cryo which is also giving you the USB error now.
Make sure to properly connect the Cryo, see this post: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5209155&postcount=59 -
Yep i had it plugged in just like your picture.

I had the same experience overclocking. I OC'ed my t9800 from 2.9 to 3.4. however i noticed that the fans didnt rev up like they did with stock clocks. Wish i knew why.
