It isn't really just for the sake of making sure you're using an OEM power supply to rake in the cash. Non-OEM equipment has the potential to damage the battery or even cause explosions by overcharging the battery.

That is what they want you to think. lol

Dell doesn't manufacture the bricks - quanta, delta, flex, etc does.

So when you buy a generic brick, most likely it's coming from the same factory.

Do you really mean to tell me the M17x brick is worth $120? Not in my mind it isn't..........

Handshake is a way to communicate
    send/get info from the notebook

about how much to charge (interactive charge) for example
if this isnt working your batery can be charged completly, but your notebook stays on internal grahpics.

There is software hard-coded into the power brick. At least this is the case with my Toshiba, which won't even charge with a third party power brick.

I don't believe it is worth 120 bucks either, however, there have been plenty of Chinese crap knock-off chargers for various laptops that cause damage to the internal circuitry. On a low end laptop, you can use any charger that will fit. High performance laptops like these and the Toshiba, HDX, etc., will do the "handshake" process.

I didn't go into too much detail into how it all works... I know that RS232 is not 100% software.

i mean it's not only a chip to identify (if you hooked up the appropriate charger)
with RS232 info is going back an forth..

Stealth mode really needs some work done on it.

A indicator in taskbar would be a nice start!
