Okay so I'm getting ready to start college in September and I've been looking around for a laptop. Now Dell offers a 7% discount to students and since Alienware is now a part of Dell, that discount applies. I've checked out various sites for reviews, including the forums here, and have seen mostly positive comments about this machine.
My main question now is, would you recommend this laptop for a college student? Because I want something that I can carry around if needed. And naturally I'm going to need a somewhat decent computer for my school work. But another major deciding factor is gaming possibilities. I mostly just play WoW but with a better system, other games may come into the picture as well. So, all factors included, would this be a good decision?
*FYI: with the discount, shipping, tax, and no added hard/software, the cost is $1821.21*

In order...
1. If it's possible at all, wait for official word from AW on a release date for the new M15x, it's rumored to be around the corner and AW would be sadly mistaken as far as sales go if they didn't release in early August before school.
2. If you can't wait I'd reccommend the Sager NP8662, which has the same GPU as the single GPU configuration based on the price you listed (assuming no SLI). Only downside is AW could release the new M15x a week after you buy the Sager and the 8662 will be immediately inferior...
3. Me and Mr. Moo are like the only people I ever have known on this entire site besides a few 17' MBP users to use heavy 17' notebooks for daily college use, only thing is we're both on the taller side and I workout on the side. Wasnt a big deal to carry a big laptop around TBH, and Moo...well he's 6'6 and 220 lbs, he probably bench presses kids like me for a workout when hes bored. So if you got a little muscle and backbone you'll be OK, but it's not for the squeemish/more physically "normal people". -
ill be honest, i got the M17x for college, and btw i dont get why your saying you need big muscles for this, um its just a laptop, its called a backpack lolz im 6'1 and only like 125lbs, so...
Edit: out of curiosity because of this thread i actually went and weighed my self and im 129lbs now >.< -
for just college use and the fact you have a gaming computer i would say ur call...
Its 12 pounds and gets 3 hours of battery ...
Ultimately you just should decide what is to big for you ... -
I want to thank you for informing me about the college discount. Thank god I lurked around, as I was going to buy my m17x without it. This info should be obvious in the dell/alienware sections and college section.

I plan on using it for college as well
I'm 5'11, weigh 130lbs...and the weight doesn't bother me as it would most people, the awesomeness makes up for it xD. -
I'm not too worried about the weight. I could lug a 12 lb. laptop around campus all day. I guess I'm going to do a bit more research before I set my heart on this thing 100%. But it's looking very promising so far.

what the..... 5'11" at 130lbs? how is that possible? my wife is 5'1" and is 100lbs. you have to tell me, errr everyone, your secret... -

Lol I'm 5'10" at 180lbs... granted I'm in tumbling, but I'm a little chunky
But for me carrying weight has never been a concern.. I bench like 250, squat like 360 etc. It's really all your personal preference... anyway Moo are you really 6'6"??? -
-
haha thats what I was wondering...
Im frikin 6'2 190lbs and people call me skinny.... I couldnt imagine more than 60lbs off my body holy crap.
And I guess this has become the official weight thread -

i'im 5'4 150 pounds but i'm not fat at all. i what everyone looks like. lol.
i carried my whitebook which was a bit heavy at times to school but i wanted performance so i sucked it up. -
I just have a ridiculous metabolism. I generally try to eat healthy things, since I'm basically afraid of every disease known to man..but sometimes I can eat the worst things imaginable, with no change.
Started working out with a friend recently, noticed that the muscle is a lot more easier to get, and is more visible for me than others.. I'm content wif the direction its going so far.
and yes my friends..of the female persuasion, get pretty angry with me. They're usually (always) on a diet, and watch me globber down my nuggets and fries [from mcfatty's] with hostility in their eyes. -
So I take it most of you would say that this is a good laptop to get if I can afford it?
