Had the laptop on the bed while I was playing Dirt 2 at about 1 am. Didn't have a cooling pad under it. I had done this before without a cooling pad and didn't think I'd need one...I had the system on for 8 hours and it was as cold as it was when I turned it on this morning (as in the morning of the same day, not at night). After a few hours of dirt 2 I start falling asleep in the RV (main menu). next thing I know I hear the M17x shutdown. I put my hand in the back of the laptop and it feels extremely hot! I turned it back on and ran the CPUID hardware monitor. One of my 280M's was about 60-65F and the other was staying at its regular temp because I had sli off. I quickly got it under a cooling pad (still on my bed) and went back to dirt 2. Stayed cool. Now the temperature is normal.
Throughout the day I was shuffling between Dirt 2 and sims 3. Had some breaks here and there when the lid was shut for about an hour. I've never seen this thing get so hot before. Should I check the inside? Run scans? ect? It only started to get hot at night in the RV. Maybe because I left it running for a half-hour in the RV while I was falling asleep like a baby...![]()
Everything runs fine though as of now..

Are you sure your gpu was oly 60-65 Fahrenheit? Mine gets 192-194 Fahrenehit (92 celcius). Those temperatures are nothing to worry about.
Btw: Putting your laptop in bed is an excellent way to block the fan openings and make it overheat, and the dust that gets sucked in is even better for more overheating in the long run.
Edit: If you don't have a laptopcooler, try using an atlas, they are usualy big enough to put your laptop on, I always do so when watching movies in bed. -
you should never ever try putting a high end laptop on a soft surface. Some low performance laptops wont mind (as they dont have air vents on the bottom), but the high end laptops suck air from the bottom. If you put them on a soft surface, you will block the air flow.
If you really want to play on the bed, get a piece of wood under it, or use the mentioned laptop cooler -
haha Wattos. My sister use to do that use her Low end laptop on the bed and it fried the motherboard. It was funny.
Terminal42 good way to ruin a good system. -

At least its an low end so you dont feel so hurt when its fried lol
Terminal, 65F is nonsense unless you put it in a refrigerator before you fell asleep as a baby (which clearly not true in this case). And besides, the period of time between you check the heat with your palm and check it with HWMonitor is too long so it tells you nothing.
You are lucky because your hardware components did not fry after overheating. As long as you see no strange behavior of your laptop you should be ok.
But I highly ecommend you to use whatever better surface for your lappy to sit on than your blanket. Even if its not overheated due to that, dust from your blanket will get into the fans and vent quicker than you may think. -
Get yourself a bed tray with feet that fits your laptop. I've been using one since I got my first laptop back in the 90s. It's perfect for using it in bed or on a armchair or couch and you don't fry your eggs with it. And it's even better when you use it together with a Cryo LX.
There are even some available that are made specifically for laptops nowadays, I hear. -
at least the computer did not start a fire. I would of aim for ply Wood one of the boxes from alienware. there about a 50 ideas that would help you.

The Cryo LX is the best notebook cooler, full stop, while not designed for use on a lap it should do fine.
Or if you're that concerned, an Antec 200 should work as well and that IS designed for use on your lap. The Antec 200 is also more readily available and cheaper, I think -
I been trying to source a Cryo LX for ages in uk.Only place is
