I have a M17x notebook that I got early Dec./09 I have had constant problems with it. It has hung, froze, video cards disappearing etc.
I had to reinstall the o/s several times (factory image was corrupt), updated all drivers, finally Alienware replaced the motherboard it fixed the black video issue but the system is still hanging, freezing, wireless quits working and blutooth stops, and I get a raid reset device (I only have one harddrive).
I called Alienware again they said to reinstall windows and call them back to install the drivers which I did last Thurs., I still have all the same problems with the wireless, the blutooth, the harddrive issues and also still freezing and hanging. Alienware wants to replace the wireless card, the blutooth card and if the memory tests passes they will replace the hardrive. If the memory test fails they will replace the memory as well.
At what point do I say enough is enough and tell them I want a replacment? The tech support said that it won't happen with only one motherboard replaced.
Specs:
T9600 2.8ghz
4gb 1333mhz ram
nVidia 260M GTX 1gb video cards

Dell policy varies for each Country, but they typically have to try 3-4 repairs before they usually agree to an exchange.
Add in the DPC issues Etc you may have a stroger case, but you most likley will have to endure a few more attempts by Dell to resolve the issues
You if course can always try escalting the issue, and ask to talk with a supervisor.
A brand new laptop should not have so many issues -

I am surprised that so many components are failing just not sure why, my notebook must have been made on a Friday just before everyone went home for the day. I will get the other repairs done if it fails again I will request a replacement.

An example I was trying to open a pdf file the screen goes white although I can see the desktop the mouse cursor is there but I can't shut the program down, I can't open another program, ctrl alt delete doesn't do anything, I have to use the power button to power off the system and restart.

Ok I know what you mean, i have had that a few times.
My main problem was that it didnt get passed the alien head on bios!
i used to get system crash or blue screen at least once a day -
I would always get into windows but after that it was a crap shoot as to whether the system would work and for how long, I don't think I have had a day that the system worked correctly since I got it.
M17x still freezing, hanging ????
