Hey! I am wondering if I can upgrade the components on my M17x. I bought my M17x on July last year. When I placed my order, the option for Intel Core I7 was not available. I just want to know if I can buy a new CPU from Intel and put it on my M17x with no problems.

P.S. I know how to open my laptop and strip it to the case.

You can upgrade to the QX9300, but thats as high as you can go. The new M17x R2 has a completely differant motherboard and the CPU is a totally differant architecture. They are Core 2 Duo and Core-i are not compatible. You M17x has an nvidia chipset motherboard, the new ones are an intel chipset motherboard.

No. You might be able to call Alienware and have the Motherboard and cpu replaced to do this upgrade. But I can not say for a Fact it could be done.

I tried that but they told me the heat sinks and other things were not compatible.

True the IGP and the CPU are using the same heatsink. The R2 is missing the IGP so you will most definetly need another one. I assume the GPU's are the same MXM3.0b so they can stay in. If they are placed at the same hight and location as in the R1.
