I just recently got my M17x as a replacement for an older broken computer, and I've been running around the internet trying to find out if it's an R1 or an R2 model.

Some people say the R1 uses Core 2 Duo, while the R2 uses Core i7. Yet others tell me that the R1 is no longer being manufactured, the R2 model replaced the R1 entirely sometime in 2009, and that even if it uses a Core 2 Duo, it's still an R2. Where or how can I find out what kind it is? What are the fundamental differences between the R1 and R2? Is it just the chipset? Is it possible to convert a computer from R1 to R2?

    My specs are:

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 GHz
    Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M
    4 GB RAM

R1's have Core 2 Duo processors, R2's have Core i7 processors. AFAIK, they still have old R1's in stock; the easiest way to check whether you have an R1 or an R2 would be to download CPU-Z and check what kind of processor you have. And no, it is not possible to convert a laptop from R1 to R2.

deltaone is right, you have an R1. P8600 CPU. Your motherboard is differant then the R2. They still make the R1, you can still order it. Just the R2 has i-core CPU
