Hi all,
The stock standard Australian M17x model comes with a Q9000 CPU, GX 280 SLI, 6 gigs of ram, 2x500GB HDD, etc. I have two questions to ask:
1) I was wondering is it worth upgrading from the Q9000 to the QX9300? It is a very expensive upgrade, and I would only do it if it has a significant influence on real-world performance (for gaming and multitasking).
2) It comes with 6GB ram standard, but there is an option to upgrade to 8GB Dual Channel Ram. Again, is this worth it? This upgrade is still reasonably pricy.
I realise that these are questions based on a system that most of you probably have not even got your hands on yet. But you seem like a knowledgeable bunch, so maybe you can help any way. In other words, what would you do?![]()
Thanks for your time,
-
1) get a fast dualcore. much cheaper, and performance will be better (for now).
2) definitely not worth it. -
i agree with whizzo

I agree with whizzo. People think quad core is 4x as fast. But untel Game manufactures learn to corp the Quad core into gamming better it not worth it. Game that claim They use quad cores. Yes and No. For a low end gpu it has some help Like low resolution. But once you start useing High resalution you can not tell the differnce in the game with dual core or quad core. Dual to the fact Most games are GPU related.

Thanks guys. Sounds like good advice!
One more thing... More than being a gaming machine, need this one to be a fast application launcher (I am actually buying 2 M17x's, another one for my old man who would probably frown if it took more than 30 seconds to load vista). Would it be worth getting him the SSD, or would that simply not effect application launch speed?
Thanks again for your replies, -
ohhhh gezus the old man needs speed that bad
yes
i would say get the SSD
or get the OCZ vertex SSD which will offer a much faster boot then the SSD that comes in it ( i boot in 7 seconds and im ready to launch Firefox)
btw there are other laptops that are fast and don't cost a fortune -
Question what dose your dad do on a laptop. If he plays Poker he dont need a super fast system.
If he like high end games and fast boot up have a ssd drive in it. -
Also, would you kindly point me in the right direction for the fastest multitasking laptop available? Thanks. -
well depends what you want to spend .....
what size?
what will he be doing?
Yes and Yes
i know im not supposed to say this but im selling my laptop ..... lol
i can configure it to any specs needed. I can include my SSD as well installed and all -
But he loves having the most powerful computer out there. His main gripe is loading times. Any kind of loading times make him think his computer is slow. Even if it is the most powerful computer in the world running the most demanding program ever, if it takes 5 seconds, it's slow.
-
May I ask what you have? -
hummm well a SSD will solve that pretty much boot times will still range 6-12 seconds but it will be fast.
i would say pick
http://www.xoticpc.com/force-3751-built-msi1722-p-2500.html?wconfigure=yes
what you want from there and then order a OCZ vertex from Newegg
i have 220 mb transfer rate where as a 7200 rpm seagate only has about 88mb
the link is in my sig
t9400 dual core CPU @ 2.53 ghz
2gb ram but i can upgrade if wanted
32 gb OCZ vertex SSD
160 GB seagate HD
dual ATI 3870's in Xfire..
illuminated keyboard red, green, and blue
also if money is no problem you could get 2 SSD's and run them in raid and get liek 400mb transfer rates that will be about 4.5 times faster then a normal HD. Your going to have to find a laptop that can take dual Hard drives
Asus w90p
alienwares
xps series
clevos.... -
If he doing internet and it take time to change websites. Having a super computer not going to help much.
The SSD drive. If he playing Fulltilt poker or something having a slow or fast computer they take time to load becuse they are like a MMO game. But it a online card game and it there end that slowing down the game. -
he was refering to loading times and boot times which is why i suggested a SSD
-
Thanks. Unfortunately, as for the xoticpc link, I am situated in Australia, so I doubt they ship here.... Putting 2 SSD's in RAID 0 sounds like a good idea and one I will consider. Not too enthused about XPS as my housemate's XPS just died 2 days ago after having a host of problems so am a little cautious!
-
lol well if your interested mine is still here
as i do have the ability to run raid 0 in my laptop as well as quads
welcome to the forums and hope you stick around -
check out the Clevo Guide for all reseller info and Australian dealers
-
Took a look at the Clevo, quite powerful but equally ugly. Got a Core i7 in them though which is interesting. As for your laptop, I am afraid I am not that big a fan of green, but maybe the old man is.
Have you tried selling on Ebay? I've sold a few laptops that way, usually quite good.
-
yes i tried some one tried to scam me
i have a black lid it looks like this ( i have both with me)

its quite nice in black
im hopeing to sell the barebones to some body so they can customize it with their own CPU and HD and RAM, or i can put it together and ship it to them
but i would be glad to sell the whole system -

Just added you to MSN Mr Moo. -
