This is the system I just ordered, I ordered it on 2/3/10 and its supposed to be delivered on 2/9/10. Heard that the R1 had alot of problems, and why does dell not have that many drivers for the R2 version yet? you look at the r1 drivers page and there are alot of downloads for it but lacking in the R2 page. No bios upgrade or anything. Cant find a YOUTUBE review of the r2 either.

It's 2 fresh to have reviews, wait a little. Drivers and fixes should follow shortly, takes some time. Don't worry. You've got the best lappy .

So the dual ati hd 4870's are better than the Dual NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 280M, 2GB – SLI® Enabled? It says on alienware that thay are. It doesnt give you an option for the Nvidia cards when customizing the R2 version. I prefer Nvidia, but if the dual ATI HD 4870's are that much better than the dual nvidia's, then i can live with that. Plus Nvidia offers its driver updates directly from its website, ATI doesnt for this card I dont think. Can anyone confirm that the dual ATI cards are that much better than the dual nvidia gtx 280m's? AND REALLY DISAPPOINTED I CANT HAVE THE OPTION FOR A BLURAY PLAYER OR BURNER ON THE R2 CAUSE THE R1 YOU COULD!!

Blueray is not available for any alienware laptop right now. Ati's are better than nvidia at the moment. Also there are a few r2 topics on the furom right now, i suggest you read them especially if you are ordering with 920xm.

I guess this is the only way to keep your ATI video card drivers updated since they dont offer them on their website like Nvidia does.

ATI Catalyst 9.12 Driver and Mod Application - Recommended!!
Cat 9.12 Released! Windows 7 64bit - This requires the MobilityModder to work on a notebook.

If all I cared about was gaming I would keep the 920 and hope that Dell releases a fix. The games I play run fine without turbo mode or even just a single gpu.

Hey Mandrake, if your still around, you seem the best placed here about laptop quality, and I'm getting panicked...

I ordered mine for gaming. No OCing, no benchmarking or anything, just plain gaming.... do you think the problem the 920xm have right now is fixable, or its a hardware problem ?

I don't see it being fixable but it can be manageable. Test to see if your system does the same thing. If it does try turning turbo mode off and see how the games run. If you have a game that is more CPU intensive then keep turbo mode on but turn crossfire off. It's a bit of a pain but it can keep you going until Dell releases a fix....assuming they do release a fix.

Joker also posted a temporary fix.

Yeah, I saw Joker post, but my question was, it the 920xm is an unfixable problem, I will not keep the laptop, I'll try to get Dell change it or whatever. I dont wanna have paid that kind of money for the 920 when it will only work as an 820 or lower!

Don't know yet. I suspect it is but I don't know if Dell will do anything about it.

Ok, what is the problem with getting a M17X-R2 with the best 920xm processor? What is the problem people are experiencing and how many poeple are experiencing it? Is there a chance I wont have the same problem?

Read the M17x-R2 everyone ETA, the ALL powerfull M17x-R2 owner lounge, and the one about the latency complaining with new M17x-r2 threads, those 3 threads are always on page 1 of the board, and youll know everything about the problems.

Check it thoroughly when you get it. If you have issues, return it before the 21 day period is out. If possible, wait until Dell fixes the issue AND it's reported to work here before buying it again.

Otherwise, you'll be trapped in an infinite loop: wait for Dell to fix, Dell puts out fix, fix doesn't work, wait for Dell to fix, etc.

    :twitchy:

Like the DPC latency of the R-1, M15x and the suttering of the M17? :D.

This only proves they do not test their sytems well enough and care only for sales profit.

I don't get why people should be system engineers and fix/apply all sorts of fixes in order to use their laptops normally.

    Shame on you Dell.

I'm starting to think that they have sales reps test the machines. Seems to be on the same knowledge level anyway

Something much easier is to use evga eleet and set the turbo multipliers lower. I keep mine at 17/17/18/18 and I've been able to get flicker free gaming in. I just hope AW can figure out what the deal is with it and issue a fix.

Dell's problem is not too unfamiliar from the video gaming industry - set a deadline and get your product out ASAP. You can always fix it later.

The problem is it often takes 6 months to a year before some/all bugs are fixed. How many new games have you purchased only to hear "wait for the patch"?

My solution for video games is to wait until the price drops to $30 or so - usually 6-12 months after launch. I think I'm going to do that for my next computer because this M17x debacle AFTER the M1730 debacle was just nuts.
