Honestly, I think Dell saw the price of the 6970M and decided to skip the expensive 485M altogether, for the R3 and M18x.

Yeah the 485M's price is hard to accept. The 6970M seems fairly "cheap" in comparison. M17x-R3 will be ordered as soon as 6970M is live on the US site. I'll test it in the R2 as well to see if it works. We'll at least have an idea of how the M18x should perform through extrapolation.

What makes everyone so sure an RBGLED will be an option? Considering the way the R3 went, I think there's just as good a chance that the M18 will go the same way. I think it wil be cheaper for them (i.e. more profitable) to not do a custom RGBLED, and rather go the 120Hz 3D route. Not that this is my preference, but I think the R3 is a tell tale sign of things to come. An 18.5inch RGBLED, dual 485's, and sandybridge XM, I wouldn't be surprised if this thing clocked in around $5k. I think Dell is more concerned with volume then high prices.

Irb Digital, that's entirely possible and likely. However, the RGB LED was custom made for the M17x-R2 so that's why its not out of the realm of possibility that it would be for the M18x as well. I believe Dell skimped on the RGB LED for the M17x-R3 because it targets a more "budget" audience.

I didn't know the R2's screen was custom. I assumed it was shared with something else. That changes my thoughts on that then, I do believe the R3 was more of the M15x's successor then the M17xR2, so its certainly possible. However I thought there was a pretty decent market for makes to build RGBLED 17" screens, where-as there are none currently for an 18". I still haven't seen the RGBLED in action, but I remember when you upgraded from your M15x and you said the difference in screen quality was highly worth it. Considering I love the screen on my 15", I was amazed at the praise you threw at it. So it will be nice to see them offer it in the M18x

Well there were 2 versions also offered in the M6400/M6500 (LG and Samsung) but those has individual profiles with the RGB LED panels. I'm not sure if they were exactly the same as the M17x-R2 version or not.

But yeah once I switched from M15x to M17x-R2, the quality difference was quite astounding. Colors, viewing angles etc were all better with the RGB LED.

Actually it's not difficult at all, if you're a business man you'd know that the smart choice would be by far the 120 htz.
Look at it this way, Dell can't possibly offer both cause that would hurt them a lot cost wise, because believe me the big majority will go for the 3d 120 htz screen (alas), and after all Dell are loking for revenu, so that possibility is out.

So that would leave us with the choice of one, and although all of us here are praying for the RGB Led, at least 75% of people would curse Dell if they see that 3d is no longer an option, how is it offered in the R3 and not in the M18x? That would hurt sales a lot, whereas people who want the RGB were already disappointed with the R3, and many have accepted the shift to 120 htz, so I don't see a way back for the RGB in a future Alienware UNLESS a 120htz RGB Led screen can be offered.

RGB LED may appear for R3 after M6600 and M18X are launched.

Agreed.....an I would be willing to pay the big premium for such an option (RGBLED 120Hz). As I feel its the best of both worlds. To be honest, if they were doing a custom screen, I feel that this should be the only upgrade option available. A base screen and an optional RGBLED 120Hz. I just don't know if a screen like this exists, or is even possible, let alone, so expensive it prices itself right out of the market.

If the choice was between Wled and 120hz or RGBLED, RGBLED would be my pick. We'll have to see if that's what happens. I've gotten comfortable with the idea that it will probably be 16:9, as that is just how the manufacturing world is going. And I'm not holding out for anything truly astounding like IPS, but it sure would be nice if it was at least RGBLED. Wait and hope.

Meanwhile the R3 could be interesting if it gets a 2920 and 485M, just because there is a level of "enough power" that also saves a few pounds of weight. But for the moment, hopes are pinned on the M18x as vaporous as that possibility may be :)

meh... I guess I am getting a new laptop when this sucker comes out. An 18" laptop would be nice. From what I gather on this forum, sounds like the 18x will be quite the nice laptop. I just hope they have Nvidia cards up for configuration, I would much rather them than the ATIs. I would have gotten a new/er M17x a while ago if it wasn't for the lack of Nvidia in the configuration.

As for what I would like to see... call me lame, but I am looking forward to a 120hz 3d Vision ready screen... given that, I would also like to see the 460m, and 485m up there in SLI. If they brought in the hybrid SSD/DHH Boom! Oh yeah I would get it the day it is released.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but AMD/ATI also has their own 3D solution right? An Nvidia SLI + 3D vision-powered M18x rig would be nice, but when it comes to choices and preferences, how about a M18x with AMD Xfire + 3D ? So far I only know of one laptop offering AMD 3D solution (the HP Envy 17 3D). BTW, does the M17x-R3 have 3D powered by an AMD graphic card?

No, when you configure the M17x R3 on the website and choose the 120Hz 3D screen you can only choose the 460m, when you choose the 6970m it gives you a compatibility error which says that the chosen screen doesn't work with the GPU.

yup because the m17x enable power xpress wich require the mux to be set up in a way that does not allow 120hz suport but some one that order a m17x with a 460 and 3d but then switch to 6970 would be able to run 3d but would lose the IGP

I'm sad for the delays, but in this day and age when things get shoved under a rug so easily, I'm glad Intel just came out and told it like it is.

But March and April aren't that far away really.

I don't mind waiting until June or July. I know that I will just kick my R2's and order an M18x in a blink as long as the following conditions are met:

    - Dual GPU (no matter red or green)

    - RGB LED

    - Best GPU and display config for under $3,200

    - Aluminum chassis and NO rubberized coating!!!

Otherwise I will stick with my R2 and skip R3.

Edit: Oh and if plastic parts, particularly the palm rest is replaced by carbon fiber I'm willing to throw in $200 to make it $3,400 :)

Me? By the time M18x released I will be using my R2 for almost a year I believe. That can be considered faithful and loyal compared to most guys here lol.

Actually the reason I'm sold for M18x is:

    - I use AW mostly as DTR. 99% of time I guess. So size is not an issue. And I love AW to the extent that I think I'm not gonna use desktop anymore. Call me lame :D

    - Bigger display is better. At the same time I can't afford closing the lid down and use external monitor. I can't afford stop starring at those bling bling LED :D

That two weird and lame and ridiculous reasons make M18x a good buy for me. I'm about to leave the U.S too and after leaving here I will have to stick, for a long long time, with whatever in my backpack on the day at the airport :(

I see. Yeah I mean SillyHoney - the R2 in her (his?) sig is quite a beast. :) I agree, if you plan to leave the US for a while (>= few years) you wanna stock up on the electronics. It's so cheap here. RGB LED style screen + M18x + 6970m cf = a very happy user. :)

I don't use desktop computers anymore either. Either AW at home or docked Thinkpad at work. I think M18x might make more "converts" (or outlaws :D ) like us. ^^

Most certainly a HIM, otherwise my wife would kill me repeatedly! (Yes, that is murder in repetition.) Lawl.

But yeah, I agree with you gents on the potential of the M18X, as well the the DTR School of Thought. The assumptions and educated speculations of the M18X make it sound like one savage, mean, beastly laptop. It sounds tempting, however, I'll be sticking with my R2 and R1 for now -- I like to learn the limits of my system as opposed to getting lost in the tech-race with hardware that won't get maxed out for a good while.
