Hey I recently built a m7700 (d900k with opteron 165) and I bought a 7900gtx off ebay to go along with it. Now the problem is I can't get the system to post when I have the 7900gtx. It seems as if it is turning on then turning off again (the same thing happens when I try and start it without a video card)

now I have an x800 for the system as well so I know that the system works, I am wondering if there is some kind of bios update or physical thing I need to do to the laptop to make this card work, or if the card is just dead.

thanks any if anyone need more info feel free to ask.

no luck, if anyone else have any tips it would be great, I have never had a dead video card in this fashion so I am hoping its something that can be fixed. Most of the video cards I have had die on me will artifact life crazy but the system will post. not really sure whats up with this one.

    Hey Table21
What Power supply do you have... I belive to run the 7900 you need 220 Watts...

you do need the 220 watt power brick, but their is something you must check first and that is the revision of your motherboard.
If your motherboard is revision 3 you can support the x800 up to the 7950GTX/Quadro FX2500M. (1.00.03 is the model which supports the higher end cards.)
If you have version 2 than you can only support up to the 7800GTX.

The stickers for the motherboard are in the memory bay either on the memory slots or on the motherboard next to their.
You can also tell from the Bios. When the system boots. If you do not see a lot of system info on boot, than go to the Bios and go to the advanced tab
Than go down to the tab labeled "boot diagnostic scree" and than make sure its set to enable.

Than when the system starts, it will say the motherboard revision in the third line or so (on the top left of the screen)

If you have a revision 2 motherboard, you are completely out of luck getting a 7900GTX to work.

I have the D900K as does Gophn, and after taking my system apart dozens of times and resurrecting the board from numerous failures, I have learned quite a bit about it

    Good Luck

in the memory slot it says v4.0a it also says its version 1.00.03 firmware.

what is a 220w power supply this I might not have. But would it stop the system from posting?

the power brick will say how much power is on it.
    For example my 220 watt brick says 20V at 11A, which is 20x 11 = 220 watts.
Their was a 180 watt power brick sold with the 6800 and lower gpu's so if you have a 20V x 9A powe supply you may want to upgrade to the 220 watt one.

If you have the 1.00.03, than you should be good on the motherboard, so it should be just the power supply giving you troubles.

ok, so mine is 20v x 9a so I guess I have the 180w power brick, but will that actually stop the system from posting? should I not be able to just post off the battery?

I dont know for sure cause mine came with a 220 watt brick.
The system should power off of the battery. If it does not power up off the battery, than the card is either not connected properly, or you received a faulty graphics card on ebay.

This laptop is killing me, I have replaced the cpu, cooler, motherboard, ram, hard drives, and it still runs for about 10min or so then locks up on me, the only thing I really have left is the video card, and now the replacement video card I have does not look like its going to work. I have never had this much of a problem with a system before

the thing can be a huge pain sometimes. At least its very easy to assemble and disassemble.
Unfortunately problem finding is not very easy. If your system starts for 10 minutes and runs with the X800, than I think the problem is related to a connection issue of operating system failure.
Try reinstalling the operating system, and double check that everything is connected properly.

    K-TRON you fool.

    I made a mistake.
If you have motherboard version 5.1 than you can only support up to the 7800GTX.

If you have version 5.2 than you can support the 7900GTX, 7950GTX and Quardro FX2500M as well as the 7800GTX and lower cards.

Sorry for the mistake, I will send you a PM, just so you know

The model of the motherboard is on the memory slot.
If the sticker says v5.1 than your 7900GTX will not work.
If the sticker says v5.2 than the 7900GTX will work in your system
