I have a M9750 with 2x 7950 GTXs and would like to know if its possible to upgrade them to what ever is compatiable.. problem is, I can not find out any information on upgrading them. AW wants over $800 for an upgrade which isn't worth it. Has or does anyone know of any online stores that sell new/referb'd video cards and which ones will work on my laptop? Thanks in advance..

Sure, ichime has installed a pair of 3870's into a M9750.

But how much of a performance improvement are the 3870s compared to the 7950GTXs? I'd love to upgrade mine personally, but... I dunno.

Thanks for the info... do you have any online retailers that are selling them? As far as I understand, you need a parent board and a daughter board?

To what kind of video card are they offering to "upgrade" your 7950's?

Jason -- Back when I asked support it was the 8700GTs .. but that was over 6mts ago ... It's not that my vid card(s) are bad, I'm just *$*# off that AW and Nvidia are not supporting the 7xxx series GPUs in their driver updates... as you can see from the sticky, the 174.x drivers are the only ones that AW supports..... and from Nvidia their 179.x drivers are not performing well for me.. so maybe an upgrade is due since the laptop is almost 2yrs old..

Okay but keep in mind that 8700s do not actually perform as well as the 7950s so it is not really an upgrade unless you need DX10 for some reason.

There are some good drivers out there for the 7950. I really like the one I have loaded now, but unfortunately it is broken right now and I can't recall which one it is.

The difference is huge. I have the M9750 w 7950 GTX's in SLI and the M17 w 3870's in Xfire.

8700's are not an improvement at all. They are slower cards with DX10 support.

Unfortunately, 3870's aren't easy to find at the moment.

If you can hold on for a while, the 4870's should be available for the M17 so there will be a glut of 3870's for sale.

Jason -- Thats why I didnt get them cause of all the probs and reviews.. I was thinking of the 8800's but now Rob's got my attention with the ATI (even though I'm a long time fan of Nvidia) ... I'm trying to get this old dog ready for Aion .....

And if anyone has any good leads on better drivers then mine I'm using currently please let me know..

Rob - Ahhh ok but question is, will the 3870's fit in my M9750? It's been awhile since I've researched the difference between the laptop models.....

They were confirmed to work by another forum user. The only problem is that Alienware refuse to acknowledge or test this at present and they arent highly available.

AFAIK, yes, ichime installed two of them in his M9750 and got SLI working.

Might want to pm him about the details.

Hi there, I think 3870s should work coz they are in MXM Type III cards. I also think 8800M GTX will work, but what's the speed of your CPU? If your CPU is not fast enough, it's not gonna help the gaming a lot -- You want at least 2.4GHz or up to remove some of the bottlenecks.

The 8800M GTX does not fit the m9750, it has the wrong MXM connector type. The 3870's are the only upgrade path right now if you can find them.
