    Hi,

I am having a problem with my laptop where it reboots itself after I have tried to shut it down. I have re-installed everything but it still happens.

Any ideas why this is happening?

    Appreciate the help

Hmm I would give the roswel crew a call and ask them about it. The roswel crew is not the standard Tech Support. They are actually knowledgeable individuals who know what they are talking about. They should be able to help you easily.

I'm guessing this is a motherboard problem of some sort. If you know how take your your CMOS battery and place it back in after 10 seconds and see if that fixes your issue.

How do you get in contact with Roswell support?

The problem you are having is most likely the button strip at the top of the laptop has just enough pressure to restart the pc. Pressing any part of the strip will start the computer just like the power button (sometimes even better). Try testing this by pressing Fn + F11 before turning off the PC. This will cause a blue dot on the left side of the strip to light up, indicating that the strip is currently Disabled (to re enable press F11 again). With it disabled, shut down and see if it ever reboots again. I never use the strip so this workaround works for me. Let me know how it goes.

And just a personal shout out: I LOVE my m9750. It is one of the most quietest and stable computers I have ever had, and it is one of the best looking ones too! The keyboard is top qualtiy and the power is awesome.

Thanks for letting me do that :)

    Hi rsgeiger,

I was really hopeful that your suggestion would do the trick but I disabled it, turned machine off and it rebooted itself again. Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I know that with the m15x, one of the power options in AlienFusion lets you program what all the power buttons do. I know the m9750 doesn't have this software, but there is default windows power settings to look at. It may be possible that you have your power button simply set to reboot the machine. Go to your control panel and check out your power options.

Is it BSODing just before it switches off?
Disable Reboot on system failure to find out:
Right Click My computer - Properties - Advanced - Startup and Recovery Settings, Uncheck "Automatically Restart" click ok and then ok again.

Hi, I just tried that and shut my machine down but it rebooted itself again. Could this be a hardware issue?

Try killing the electricity to it:

Unplug the system and remove the battery. Wait a few minutes, than set it up again and try to use the PC. See if the problem continues. If this does not work, Then you will have to call alienware and see what they can do for you.

    Hi DBedgood,
This might be a shot in the dark, but based on my experience, it might be a potentially bad hard drive. I would remove the hard drive and try turning it on without it. If it stays on, and doesn't reboot, you might want to try a diagnostic for the hard drive.

    Hope this helps,
    Gabe

Sorry to hear that. GabeZ had a good suggestion, so I guess I would try testing the hard drive first. But the truth is the m9750 power functions are all finicky.

For me I once had the situation where it just wouldn't boot up at all. With it plugged in, plugged in with battery, and with just battery. Had to remove everything and try it all again and finally it booted up. So for now I would also try see what behavior you get with the battery out. Then see with just the battery and no outlet power. I just know there is an answer to this one. :)
