I have seen a few GTX 260m Cards pulled from M17x laptops for sale at decent prices and since its MXM III running at 75W I was wondering what the community thinks..

Would this mod work? Willing to try if chances are good but do not want to throw money away.

I dont think it will work. Between the geforce 8600 to 8800. The geforce 8800gtx needed more power. That was the last gen. gpus. I would guess the power for the 260m and 280m would be the same as the 8800gtx or rebranded 9800gt.

I did find this on notebookreview About the 8700gt 512mb Which would be faster then what you have.

the 8700m gt is slower then the 7950m gtx.

The M17x cards WILL NOT FIT since they use a mxm 3.0b slot and the m9750 uses a 2.1. Now it very well may fit a gtx 260m and power it but you could not have sli since the only 260's out that have mxm 2.1 do not have a sli connector.

So yes you could try one and it could and might work as far as being reconized since it's a g92 core but then you have to think about 3 things

    heat
    power
will the heatsink cover the proper components

I think 1 card will work personally but I would be very very careful.

    Cheers

    Wrong...

    Correct.

More on topic, yes a 260M MIGHT work, provided it's MXM 2.1. The MXM 3.0 cards in the M17x will NOT work for sure. Plus, the 260M is 75W, a damn sight higher than the 45W of the 7950GTXs, so both power and heat might be an issue.

I have a quick question about memory upgrades for the M17x as well. My order is in the build phase and I went with the 4GB 1066Mhz Ram with the idea that I would find a good deal on cheap memory to add on later. I have seen from a couple different threads on here as well as other forums where many have said there wasn't a huge difference in upgrading from 4GB to 6GB. Also I heard to make the jump to 8GB isn't worth the price of the upgrade because everything works just fine with 4GB. Since I have read a few conflicting opinions, I figured I would ask some of the hardcore users what your opinions were? Thanks in advance!

Off topic: Keep the 4GB RAM until 8GB is cheap and there are more universal x64 binaries that you will use (aka Photoshop level apps/server apps)

On topic: Your m9750 is at its max, and video card modifications in notebooks (even with MXM) are very risky. The best you can hope to do at this point is either find an ATI 3850 card (very rare) or get a SSD. Otherwise if you need more performance get a M17x :)

I have already decided to try out a 9800m card to see if it works, and I have a feeling a 3870 would work too. The reason I thought a 260m might work is that the cards have fallback from 3.0 to 2.1 and the only thing that the versioning really affect is the bus/memory speed but it seems consensus is that it would run to hot/too many W's.

According to EVERY single review and personal experience the 8700 GT cards are among the worst value for money out there because of the strangled BUS speed.

In most games they can't even compete with 7950 GTX head to head for single cards and I sure wouldn't change out my SLI set for a single 8700 card.
