Hi our Alienware laptop has the same symptoms as dan12909 Have contacted Alienware who want nearly £200 just to tell us what's wrong, So if anyone can help with Dan's query I would also be a happy bunny

Pull out the CMOS battery (under the inspection cover) then plug it back in after about 5 minutes - it may fix the problem. Sounds very much like a motherboard problem which is a £400 replacement if you are not in warranty.
-
ok well could be a fried mobo ...
or a bad HD
etc( hopeing here lol )
hold on imma get some links for you
here is how to change your cmos just to be safe

ok ill try the cmos reset with unplugging the battery to it but i also contracted AW would be almost 600 bucks to send it in and have them replace the board if it gets to that point
-
Also i have switched out the harddrive and it still doesnt turn on
-
yea its expensive lol
did you have SLI or single card?
try removing the battery(non CMOS one and unplugging it and holding the power button for 10 sec (cant remeber how long ) then plug it in and try -
it has a single card
-
and i tryed the other idea and no effect
-
Although the mobo could be at fault, I'd take a look at your power button as well.
You said when you put in the battery or plug it in it tries to power up. A faulty power button could be the cause of your problems. -
Hi After trying some of the suggestions posted above with no joy, I tried a few other ideas posted on other threads and Whoopie the laptop fired up
I Removed each 1gig memory card then swapped and replaced one at a time, then with the lower card left out and the top one installed she fired up.
It seams that the problem is with the lower card slot and not the memory card
So after a quick visit to PC world we bought a 2 gig card which gives us the same memory but only using 1 card slot
Big thanks to all on here without the info on this site I would have not dared fiddle with the laptop
I hope this also helps the original poster with his problem

well it would be nice if its a power button problem as i could just get the parts for it to be sure but not sure how to make sure it is that as i said earlier it tries to start up with out anyone hitting the button and my dad said it would restart on him randomly from the first time he got it so ill see when i get home if it works
-
You may have to open the laptop up so you can gain access to the wiring for the power button. If there is a connector for it, disconnect it and then install the battery or plug it in. If it doesn't try to start on it's own then you've got a bad power button. If it still tries to start up on it's own, then it's likely a mobo issue.
-
yea i tryed that and looks like the board is bad

Hi
At this point the problem could be related to any harware device attached to the mobo (Video Cards, Memory, Hard drive or the Motheroboard in the worse case scenario)
If the computer turns on and you can hear the fans and you have some lights, my suggestion would be to test connecting an external monitor, defective LCD could be related if you dont have image on the screen
If it does not give u image you can try testing one memory stick at the time in different ports (to test Ram and Ram ports)
Clear Cmos by removing Cmos battery for at least 5 minutes ( http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/...WFyY2hfdGV4dD1tOTc1MCBjbW9z&p_li=&p_topview=1)
Reseat VC or test one Vc at the time if more than 1 VC
Remove non esential components for the computer to post (Hard drive Optical Drive, Wireless Card, Secondary Memory Slot and Secondary Video Card if any)
KBA's in the support area might be useful to do this
Remove Cmos - Answer ID 5556
Remove VC - Answer ID 5557 and 5555 (Secondary VC)
Remove or Reseat Mem -- Answer ID 5554
Remove Optical Drive--Answer ID 5082
Remove HDD--Answer ID 5081
Remove WIFI Card --Answer ID 5605

I have a new MB but need help on putting it in is there instructions on how to remove it and put the other back in
-
I just bought a new motherboard for mine as well because it was exhibiting most of those symptoms. No video, hard drive would access for a couple of seconds and the whole machine would freeze. took memory out, vid card, ect and basically the same thing. Mine would sometimes turn on though and be fine as long as I didn't turn it off so I figured it must be a bad controller on the mobo. If it doesn't work when I get it put all back together then I'll be using it for target practice later. I think I'll stick to netbooks from now on.
I'm still waiting for mine. Should be here tomorrow or friday. There are no instructions on how to replace a mobo, probably because they don't want to say anything that can void your warranty or when they can charge you half the price of a new laptop just to fix it.
There are a couple of instructions from AW's site that will help you take it apart but your mostly on your own, and I will tell you that taking this thing apart is no stroll through the park. On AW's main site hit the support button and then click on FaQ/knowledge base and type in "m9750" and few threads will come up on how to remove things such as keyboard, cd drive, memory, and video card. Everything will eventually have to come out but basically if you see a screw then it needs to come out...
You'll have to disconnect a few cords inside and remove the monitor (which is probably the easiest thing), but mostly there are tons of screws. I messed up and broke the latch holding the wire from the touchpad but thats nothing a bit of tape won't fix.
Hopefully both of ours will come out fine in the end. I'll pray for you. -
The replaced MB works and computer is up and running again. Kinda glad as my dad gave me this laptop because it didnt work and he didnt want to put out he money or effort to fix it
-
Glad to see yours worked without a problem. Hopefully mine will work without a problem as well. Really hoping to get this thing fixed before I go on vacation and start next set of classes. If not then I plan on grabbing a netbook (maybe the Gateway LT3103u) since I don't want to carry around a 17 inch all day.

Where did you guys get your replacement motherboard if I might ask? From Alienware or another source?
-
Got em off ebay. Some vendor had 2 posted and when I checked a few days ago it was down to 1 and I grabbed it. I figured dan12909 must have grabbed the first one. They seem to be very scarce and AW will most likely not sell you one unless they install it themselves. AW has a list of sites that sell spare parts but I've checked em all and none of them sold the mobo.
Best chance is to search the marketplace on this site for people selling their m9750 parts or keeping looking on ebay until somebody posts another one. -
u are correct i got the first one and did a stress test on the computer this week at work as i used it for my job and no problems at all now. I am very happy it fixed the problem my dad had on his old one. The ones we both got were from ebay and i was lucky to find a seller with 2 of them.
-
also there are a few m9750 MB for sale on ebay that are used but at least you can replace the MB if you need to at a much cheaper price if you are out of warrenty.

Hello everyone..
My m9750 is showing this symptoms so I decided to buy another MOBO from ebay (seller claimed it was tested and working).. however after I replaced it I'm still having the same issues
Can someone point me in the right direction? I think maybe its a faulty video card (however I've swapped both to primary slot but no luck).. or maybe a CPU issue.. (I'm not sure about this cause keyboard lights go on , then a bit of HD.. then a full stop..)
did you guys found another solution?
thank you!
M9750 will not boot
