I'm in a serious bind. I upgraded windows xp to vista but after several mishaps regarding to both performance and stability I decided to downgrade again to xp but now the dvd drive isn't being detected anywhere, both on windows and bios, and since I need it to install windows this turns out to be a serious problem. Is there any solution to this?
    P.S.: The drive is a NEC ND-6750A

HERE are the XP Drivers for the Drive.

Or, Do you want the Vista drivers for it?

Please tell me if that works. If not, i have another suggestion. :)

    Try reconnecting the optical drives.
To do this open the harddrive bay, and unscrew the screw which holds the optical drive in place. Than push the drive out with your finger, and reconnect it.
If it still does not get recognized, try resetting the Bios again.

When I go to the device manager the ata channel 0 shows in the resources page a I/O internal error shows up at 03f6-03f6, and this could be the source of all problems since it affects the computer outside windows. How can I solve this?

Did you install those drivers i linked to? And try K-TRON's suggestion?

    If so, also try...

    Go to Run
    Type Regedit
    Press Enter or click Go.
    Find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class/
    {4D36E965-E325 -11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
Then, on the right side, delete "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" Registry Keys.
    Restart and try again.

The problem is that the drive is not recognizable both in and outside windows, therefore I cannot upgrade the firmware. Also both on this and on the previous installation there were no upper or lower filters on the registry

    Oh... Hmm...

Can you try the drive in another computer or try a different drive in the computer?
