So here is the whole sordid tale:

My Wife allowed me to buy a gaming laptop for Christmas. I choose the Alienware MX17, as I have had dell laptop computers and the quality has always been very high. Alienware has a great reputation so I went with them.

The laptop arrived on Jan 8th, and I was stunned by the awesomeness of it. One of my little girls even oohhed and ahhed over it. I was very proud until I hit the power button and the laptop crashed.

The hard drive was bad. Never even got the system to start.

Called support, they said they would overnight a HD to me, I was a little crestfallen, as the laptop was new and part of buying a new expensive laptop was the joy of turning it on and playing with it. So the overnight, was actually the next business day, so on Monday Jan 11th, I got the new HD. I installed WIN 7 from the install disk, and tried to install all the drivers from the CD provided.

My Chipset driver caused the computer to blue screen. I called support, and they blew it off and told me that that it was nothing to worry about. As the system seemed to be working fine, I sort of believed him.

So I installed World of Warcraft, and was disappointed in the performance. I was getting maybe 15 FPS, and bursts of 30 FPS, with everything turned down. So I kept poking around, and saw that my Bios needed to be upgraded.

So I did that, and the machine became unusable. The processor was sitting at 90% usage off a fresh boot. Called support and 4 hours later and a reinstall of WIN 7, and a few more crashes caused by the Chipset drivers, they are now sending out a new Motherboard, and a new Hard drive. I am not sure that this is the problem, but I guess I am willing to try anything.

I am wondering if anyone else has had these types of issues, or if this is just a string of bad luck. I really want this laptop to work, but for the price I expect a lot better of the hardware.

Any suggestions at all, or should I just start the RMA process and get a different brand of Laptop?

I am still in the 21 days, I have until the 29th, so I am willing for them to replace these components and wait and see, but to get a new shiny thing and already have it broken before I get to use it just sits wrong with me.

Thanks for any help suggestions that anyone might have.

wow, that's a bad luck. Sorry to hear such things happen.
It really sucks to pay so much money, wait for it to arrive and then instead of enjoying your new toy to have to jump through hoops like that.
Since you're on your 21 days, i'd suggest to ask for your money back, order the new R2 system and hope for the best :)

    Good luck !!

Well the tech has not showed up for two days, and they somehow suddenly have the wrong number, so they couldn't call me.

Thank goodness I will not let a dat go by without a call.

I am returning this piece of trash and never ordering a Dell again.

To send a computer out that never worked and then make me jump through hoops to try and get it returned. Already going on 1 hour of transfers and rude customer support people to try and get an RMA to get my money back and this Laptop out of my house.

I hate hearing stories like this because I always have great service. I decided to return my system after 21 days and they were like "no problem we'll email you the shipping labels." And they did. No grief. And my laptop worked.

Im sorry to hear that. I guess you got a lemon. Just RMA the system saying that it is faulty and get the M17x R2 with RGB LED. These systems are really awesome unless you are in the unlucky case of having a lemon. The M15x I have is the best build laptop I have ever had

Look first time you were on intergrated gpu

    2 time driver wasn't right

3 when you updated bios some apps needed to be updated to

now don't bash Dell ... They screwed up but so it you ...

Now I would highly reccomend returning it and getting the core i7 version it's cheaper for what you get now

I happen to have installed all the updated Apps, and all the software that Dell told me to.

I made no mistake, Dell sent me a bad laptop, and then treated me like it was my fault that the laptop was broken when it got to me.

So there is every reason to bash Dell, they failed, not me.

Maybe you should order the M17x instead of MX17 next time.
    ;)

It's just a lemon, man. Every other company have lemons too.
