I am thinking of assembling a m17x-r1 from parts.

I would like to know if there's any other model of alienware that I can also use (for example, can I use the lcd from m9700/m9750, etc?).

Where would I obtain the screws, cables (like sli cable), *all the small things*, etc.

    Ebay/Ztronics seem dried up.

Don't know why you would want to bother trying to do something like this. You're going to have a hard enough time finding all the important parts (e.g. main boards and GPUs) let alone "all the small things"...and even if you could it'd likely run you more than what a new system would cost. Notebooks aren't modular like desktops.

Much easier to do this type of project with a Dell. All kinds of parts on eBay and if eBay doesn't have it Dell spare parts does.

BTW, the m9750 is similar design. Although not an exact match a lot of the plastics are interchangeable.

You can buy an entire M9700 or M9750 lid set (with bezel, screen, lid, camera, etc) as that will work with an M17. HD caddies and the hinge cover are also compatible. Everything else though aren't interchangeable with the M17.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing, but for the new M17x.

That would be much more difficult to do because it's an exclusive design for that model. Waiting around for parts on eBay may be your only choice.

Try to find a broken one. That would probably be easier.

true, but people will do anything if they are determined to :p The ONLY reason I ever like alienware is the skull/head design. I'm guessing I can't take another brand notebook and just buy the skull-lcd cover (excluding the m17x and ocz whitebook).
