It's been great reading all the M17X threads and I'd like to thank all you notebook experts out there for providing noobs like me with awesome information.

Having read a number of posts regarding the M17X freezing up with McAfee antivirus, should I simply uninstall McAfee as soon as I switch on my M17X for the first time? (Delivery is scheduled for tomorrow)

    Cheers! :)

    Tee-Hee. Nice joke.

The only bit of decent software Norton have produced in the last 10 years is this.

I'd replace that word 'good' with 'terrible'. My brother's laptop got loaded with viruses with it, my friend's computer's norton decided to phone it in and he ended up having to format the hard drive with all the viruses. Ironically, he now uses McAfee without any problem...

I'd recommend AVG. Free, and it provides superb virus protection.

General when I get a new piece of equipment, I just Wipe the HDD's and Start with a fresh OS. I'd suggest that. I've never had an Alienware, but I'm assuming the drivers will work on all i386/x64 flavors of vista.

    Only my 2 cents :)

NOrton 360 version 3.0 has 99.7% detection rate #1 antivirus and internet security

kaspersky internet security 9 has a 97.8% virus detection rate and web intrusion prevention together. ranked #2 best internet security and antivirus together.

I only use the best antivirus and internet seucrity software, i do not use free software for my computers.

I decided to burn any Norton stuff I had a few years ago. I'd upgraded to the latest version of their firewall. The upgrade installation uninstalled the old firewall, re-booted, then connected to the net - without installing the new firewall!!! It took 30 seconds before something tried attacking my machine.

That's when I found out that it's impossible to actually get rid of Norton without downloading their removal utility.

I swapped over to Kaspersky and was amazed at the increase in speed of my whole machine.

Thanks for all the positive input, guys. McAfee is coming off and Avira is going in! :D

While we are on the subject... should I stick with Windows Firewall or dowload something else?

    Avira.

Been having too many problems with AVG and Avast takes FOREVER to scan.

I will never use Norton or Mcafee. The only pay AV software I liked was TrendMicro.

If your using a router (wireless or wired), a software firewall is not really necessary.

Guess I am lucky. McAfee hasn't slowed my m17x - that I can tell (except when it does a system scan while I'm playin Far Cry 2). And Norton saved my desktop from having to do a full system format and/or waste money buying new hardware. I had some weird virus. None of the other AV programs could find a single thing (including AVG, avira, Kaspersky, or McAfee. Yet it was obvious something was terribly wrong with my computer. Out of desperation, I bought Norton. It found it and removed it, my system was back to normal.

Kinda staying loyal to Norton since they succeeded where the others failed me....

Norton admittedly has a high detection rate, however I've heard a load of horror stories about it, not to mention the way it slows down a computer is unbelievable. I run AVG on both my M17 and my desktop and I've never had a virus problem.

True. I'm one of them, acutally. Had serious issues with Norton years and years ago, after Peter Norton stopped writing code for his programs. Stopped using them for a long long time. But then again, I was desperate enough to try anything to fix my computer. Even Norton lol.

Yeah, I've visited sites that I really should have stayed away from, installed "toolbars" (I still think that's where the virus came from). Since I've stopped engaging in risky browsing, I've avoided 99% of the infections....

AVG is a good program to use and it is free or you can buy their pro version
I like Norton 360 cause it has alot of useful diskmanagement apps in it and I liked how the firewall would handle know products. But I don't use norton anymore so

If you still want to do "risky" browsing do it inside a vm ! then just reinstate a clean image when it gets infected - works for me

Until you have a VM escape and a virus that permanently writes to your cmos....very rare but it can happen.

Where is McAfee located on the M17X? I was looking for it and can not find it.
