Hi there,
Has anyone tried one of these:
http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/SP...d-for-dell-mini-9-----80000871-1220584935.jsp
It looks the same fitting as the mini pci-e on the M15x plus there seems to be an empty one next to the wireless card.
-
If you can get this to work in the m15x, then I'll be different getting myself one of these!!
-
The read and write speeds are pretty slow (70/15).I wouldn't want to run a OS or any other program off of it and expect it to be faster than a platter hard drive.
-
it can serve as a nice back up of important files since killing one is very hard
-
If you have a multi card reader slot that has compact flash they have 32gb cf cards if you don't mind taking up the slot. thats what one of my Buddy's does for his music and some vids that way he keeps his hard drive free.
-
That's not a bad idea. My multi reader slot stays empty most of the time. Perhaps it's time to put it to some good use. How much would a 32gb SD card cost vs a 32SSD mini pci-e?
-
you can get an eSATA HDD enclosure, put a SATA2 SSD in it and get up to 3.0 Gb/second transfer speeds. Way faster than a usb drive or memory card. Great for making those large transfers go a lor quicker.

rob thats not the point he wants something in there to help keep his computer clean. He doent want somethig else to carry -
Oh so the mini ssds and the compact flash are about the same price. I guess it all comes down to the speeds and what you feel like doing.
-
Yeah, I don't want to have to carry another thing around with me, although the enclosure idea is good for portable hard drives that I keep lying around my desk.
SD cards look a lot cheaper than the SSD's... and SD cards are universal too meaning I can carry my information around to use on other laptops when needed. I can by a USB connector for the SD and use it on older computers as well. hmmmm. sounds like the SD cards are a better choice. -
do the M15x have a second hard drive slot like the M17? if so there are alot of cheap 2.5 hard drives. you dont need a fast one if your just using it to get junk off your main drive.
-
I followed your links MR.Moo,
Does the media card reader on the M17 support SDHC cards? I couldn't get one to work on my M9750 even with the Microsoft patch.
And where does the PCIe card mount on the M17 that you linked? -
Yeah thats what I liked about the sd cards and the compact flash. Hope it works out and is a help.
-
it does support sdhc
as far as i know lol i changed my mind cuz i guess there is always an exception -
Cool. Good to know.

its just like " how to install a wireless card"
its just a mini pci-e HD instead same way and slot
but Rob i just noticed you have the tv tuner and the WIFI card so you cannot put a mini pci-e HD in since there is only 2 slots (to my knowledge)
also the m15x does not support dual hard drives -
Yeah that's right MR.Moo,
But I'll be able to use the eSATA port on the back instead of using the USB port with my external drives. -
yup just duck tape a 2.5 inch'er to the lid and go with it
-
Do you have the option for the Turbo Cache memory in the M17, that might give you another slot? The M15x seems to have three, one for Turbo memory, one for the Wireless card and an empty one. As you say the speeds aren't that quick, but might be nice for backups or something, without having to carry an external drive. I did think about using SD cards as well, certainly cheaper.
-
so would the extra pci card show up as a removable drive?
or could you remove the turbo cache and add the unit there?
or even add two units?
the ideas....lol
i am trying to see the inside pics of the m15x and cant make the slot out real well cept the wireless and the TC.
I can not see the additional one method is refering to...
guess i will have to open mine when i have time...lol
i think i see it now...but it looks like there is another card in it already...still gonna have to open mine.
another question is will it fit? i see they are made for dell minis and asus netbooks...so would it fit in the 15?
also - anyone know the avg read/write of an ipod? -
-
ok fine fine ......gotta be fancy
-
-
...dont make me crush ur toy
with mine
-

not from the same planet
your from

im from
00010001 -
Nice... Binary numbers 00001111 = 15 and 00010001 = 17. Not bad bro!
-
all your fancy binaries and you guys cannot answer my questions...pfffft.
-
I opened mine on Sunday to clean out the vents. I didn't get the turbo ram with my m15x, so I assume that would be slot that we want to fill? It's an empty hole in the computer. The bottom left corner right?
-
the m15x has three mini-PCIe slots. two at the back (stacked, IIRC), and one under the left palm rest if my memory doesn't decieve me. the SSD should work in any one of the three - although the back two are usually taken by WiFi and TM.
-
thanks guys.
that was what i was wondering as far as locations. i thought the one looked like it stacked but was not sure. and what is TM?
will it show up as a removable drive then? -
TM = Turbo Memory. don't think it'll show up as a removable drive, since it's not really meant to be that. my bet is it'll show up as a normal internal drive.
-
hmmmm
i think imma gonna try this.
with the speeds much more reduced verses standard SSD, do you think it would still be good for music/video storage and playback? -
The Turbo memory you have to enable in the BIOS (Robson), I'm not sure if this would be the same.
-
-
you could still boot linux i think
-
i think this is totally not worth it. these mini-PCIe SSDs are far too expensive when it comes to the price/performance ratio.
-
we know that he is not looking for super fast drive he wants somethign that he can put in to have a backup/ HD for his entertainment and pRon
just playin
-
get a bigger internal HDD then. or a SB drive. or an external drive. but a slow SSD is just stupid.
-
hey i don't judge lol ..... i was just stateing what he wanted...me personally i would get a SB.
-
very much so. on a side note, the theoretical maximum capacity of the m15x is now 2x500GB + 3x64GB = 1192GB
suck on that, m860tu
-
o hhh yea .... wait i think that is more then the m17
2x500 gb
2x 64 gig
1128 gigs -
yup. *smug grin*
-
-
-
ooh, good point. so that puts us at 1256GB, or one and a quarter terabyte
-
yea
computers are getting better and better
-
Altough the M15x can have an extra 64GB in the 3rd Mini PCI-e slot, the M17 could have a Blu-Ray Rewritable disc (as it has 2 HDD bays + optical), thus giving it an extra 50 GB, so only 14GB behind...
-
still i dont like being beaten ..... wyou can put 16 gigs of ram and turn part of your ram into a hard drive
there is your 14 gigs -
the m15x can have a bluray writer too you know
Mini PCI-e SSDs
