A photo from this article on the M17x shows detailed hardware specs and reveals a couple of interesting things.
![]()
First is the Model Number: W850DI which suggests that the laptop is related to the Flextronics/Arima W840DI...a.k.a. the M17/Whitebook.
The other, even more, interesting thing is the line VGA/B: PWA VGA/B AMD M98 Q GD5 1G AB330 G which could mean the card in this machine is part of the ATI 4800 series and may have 1G of GDDR5 RAM.

It's going to be the Red color M17x, IMO.
-
That's obviously silver.
-
In my opinion. Going to be some type of special release, or something.
-
Also, would that mean the M17 is able to hold the 4870? -
-
No Im saying that is the M17x, except that it may have been built by Flextronics not Quanta like we all assumed.
-
lol @ the people who thought it was a whitebook
all he was saying was Flex made it and it was the next model after the 840di which was the m17 -
It's really strange lol. -
Found out what language it is....Vietnamese.

Its Not A M17 Refresh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its Just Another Model Made By Flex Tronics
According To That -
It's obviously the new M17x in that pic.....
-
You know I really thought the subject of this thread made it clear that this was in the M17x....I even capitalized the M so people knew I meant the new model. ;þ
-
i know, but another point is that was a ES sample so it proably was all of the above
-
that review was in january so i wonder how they got that
we just heard about it in feb. -
01/06/2009 is June 1, 2009 in Vietnam.
-
damn good point im a American what can i say
-
i was wrong this does look to be a M17 refresh/m17x refresh due to it being from Flex and not Quanta....
its both sorta , Flex dropped the m17/Whitebook for this ... and its the 850 which means its the sucessor.
and AW made it just like the m17x -
Looks like the base config of the machine with the P8600 so that should mean a single card like the base config of the Nvidia model.
Now though if the Nvidia model starts with a single GTX 260M and goes up to dual GTX 280M SLI could it also turn out that the ATI model starts with a single 4850 but has the same sort of upgrade options for CrossfireX 4850s and 4870s..... -
I dunno, I'm hoping for it but just don't see it happening..... -
m15x. -
Like I said, I HOPE I am wrong -
Both Z's sources and Chaz's interview at E3 confirmed ATI cards for the M17x.
Great now I'm sounding like Moo with the M17. ;þ -
yea but now the fact is this is Flextronics
we KNOW they have 4870's and could be why they denied the m17 to have them so that the m17x their best laptop yet could have them -
-
Red case with dual 4870... It would be nice
-
-
Its just bad news its flextronics.. ocz already stopped dealing with them.. for a good reason.. but perhaps they made this one well.. well just have to wait and see.. and if crossfire 4870s or 4850s come that would certainly mean bad news for nvidia since their cards are higher priced.. but good news for gamers.. cheaper gaming rigs with pretty much the same power as sli id say..
-
Flextronics isn't bad (they did screw up on the quad issue but name one ODM that hasn't screwed up?) Their build quality was GREAT no squeks or issues from me.
I think they just stopped selling the m17/Whitebook to start on this .... it does seem to be a masterpiece. -
Megacharge Custom User Title
It's looking good so far, any chance they may sell this as a bare-bone like the whitebook or do you think Dell is clamping down on it?
-
also Flex doesn't even want to admit to this so Dell has them Shut up pretty good lol -
.
-
Megacharge Custom User Title
Shucks... too bad for us then.
-
If this is happening i'm buying that machine in a blink of an eye (That red color would be really cool aswell)
-
-
-
i sold my m17 for it
MXM 3.0 = so worth itnot to mention the design and if i do choose to change colors i will be able to salvage on off ebay
then send it to get anodized to ANY color -
OCZ stopped selling the whitebook and doesnt cooperate with flex anymore but the m17s are still selling.. thats the most disgusting part in my oppinion.. at least stop selling these units!
I guess well just have to wait a bit to see if the new arima has any faults or not.. hope it doesnt since so many people just jumped on it.. -
By the time i add dual 280's (which is the only thing to beat Xfired 3870's) then i am well over £1000 down
just not worth it, Eu peeps are getting screwed, unless they fix this in a year or so when i am looking to replace the M17 then i will prob go Clevo or someone else (providing they can be sourced in the uk for a good price) -
At first look, I'd say this is an entry-level version of the M17x. Seeing as the M17 will likely be phased out when production of the new beast ramps up, having a lower starting price on their 17" offering just makes sense. I don't think ATI is the key player here in terms of dropping the starting price, cuz Nvidia just launched their G 200M & GT 200M series chips, but definitely a viable option.
So, let's say they start offering ATI chips in time for the back-to-school crowd... Any chance they might make a new model name for it? I know they said the "M17x" will offer ATI, but I don't see them placing an Nvidia symbol next to an AMD/ATI symbol on the features page (or the configuration options page for that matter). Perhaps there will be separate links, one to configure with ATI, another with Nvidia, guess I just can't remember how they've done it it the past... -
ASI sells the Whitebook now.
Flex decided to go with the 850 instead they cut loses and decided it would be better to keep it as mid -high en computer and then focus on the 850 which was a smart move
The Whitebook is alot smaller then that Clevo to ... i dont know which one your referring to but if its the 9262 ...we are like .5 inchs thinner and not sure on the rest. The m17 when it was designed proably never was exected to get upgrades..... Also if Flex is making both the 840 nd 850 then they don't want the 4850/4870 ddr5 in the Whitebook....that would cut sail on the 850 and Dell would be furious .
its all about the money in this case, i dont agree with it all but the logic is there. Find me another ODM with that build quality and power without issues. The Asus needs BIOS update... every high end laptop cannot make every one happy ... they all have issues.... -
-
well now i've seen it all. that must be one of the more mystifying pictures i've seen around here. an M17x built by Arima, part of the W8X0-DI product line with ATI cards... this is interesting.
-
-
a 280 is like 10-20% slower then Xfire ... faster in some games ..
so SLI 260's should beat Xfire pretty easy... but we will see
the 3870's will always beat them in 3dmark06 but vantage and games will be a different story -
no? -
you math is correct but i still say real world performance they will beat the 3870's in games and vantage
-
well the sli 280 got just over 10000 in vantage, with my m17 scoring around 7.5 means that there is roughly 28% increase over the 3870's in sli
i would speculate that sli'd 260's will be roughly equal or maybe very slightly higher but it wont be alot -
We don't know the reason OCZ dropped Flex...they never told us specifics. For all we know the reason OCZ dropped the Whitebook was because Flex was making this machine for Alienware and wouldn't share so OCZ felt jilted.
But then again we also don't really know if this is a Flex machine only that it has a model number similar to a Flex machine. -
Mobility 4870 GDDR5 Spotted in the M17x?
