Are there any plans for a refresh of the Mx15 that will include the addition of USB 3.0?

I was ready to pull the trigger on a new full-up Mx15 but noticed in the specs that it was still using USB 2.0.

And what happened to the BluRay option on all Dell laptops? Did I miss a memo and BluRay is dead now or something?

pretty sure they just ran out of blu ray drives, you can do the upgrade yourself still

it is highly unlikely the M15x will get an update, as it is only months old and uses current tech

USB 3.0 is not THAT important with esata as an option for external storage

It is a that important for people like me that like the portability of a USB powered hard drive, at 10x the speeds of USB 2.0

But isn't 5400rpm USB powered HDD itself is a bottleneck in transferring data?

It's not much important yet! but nice to have new technology. specially when it comes to super premium notebooks. I think new Envy have it.

Are there esata externals that don't require ac power or the usb connection at the same time?

Not really. USB 2.0 hd can usually sustain 20MB/s rate. A normal 5400 should gives at least 70MB/s.

Ignored? It was directly aimed at your "esata" statement. You need a separate power source. In most cases an A.C. Adapter, but there are alternatives, like mentioned, but this still requires the use of another port (usb) for power. The M15x is already starved for ports with only 3. I still don't understand how a 15 inch notebook can be this massive, built for gaming, and only have 3 USB ports, but thats another thread altogether.

I hard drive fast enough to need USB 3.0 to be utilized will pull more power than USB can supply most likely, unless it is an SSD

And personally, I have not seen many SSD's used as external solutions

I do not see using 1-2 ports as the end of the world if an AC adapter is still not needed (1 if a USB-eSata powershare, 2 otherwise for esata and usb power)

I'm by no means the most savvy computer guy. But you're making some large assumptions. PCWorld says usb 3.0 uses 1/3 the power of 2.0. They're already getting esata speeds with usb 3.0 hard drives, so I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say a hard drive fast enough to use 3.0 speeds will pull more power than usb can supply. But back to the original issue, what I like in a portable hard drive is portability. I transfer massive files between my laptop and my passport on a regular basis since I travel constantly for months at a time. They claim 10x faster speeds, and if I could cut my data transfer time in half or more, while only using one usb port (less wires, less outlets), then this is an ability worth the extra money to upgrade to, especially with only 3 ports on the M15x. I already use 2 ports for my mouse/keyboard, so in reality, I only have 1 port left. It's USB 3.0 devices are still backwards compatible with 2.0, and USB is certainly more widely used than esata. I'm not saying no one can do without USB 3.0, but if you're not willing to see the advantages of this over what's available with esata and USB 2.0 then I think you're just being stubborn.

From what i read USB 3.0 will provide more power along with the faster speeds

IMO USB 3 will be a much better option than e-sata which can be a real pain at times.

I think your expectations are a little high for a 15 inch gaming notebook with regards to quantity of USB ports.

    Ouch! Easy guys :p

USB 3.0 is on the Envy right now but any other laptop we know? I think if 3.0 is a trend then M15x will feature it sooner or later. But I think later because M15x is still very new.

if we were talking some under 1K laptop I might agree, but were talking about a 1500 -2500 dollar laptop, it should have 4-6 USB ports.

Fair enough. I just looked at two random other makers of gaming notebooks and their +1500 nb's featured 4 USB so 3 is below average so I rescind my statement. Sorry. But more than 4 seems a bit much to ask for really.

I agree 4 or more ports is needed. As for the 3.0 discussion. I know it is much faster and it can provide 150 mA at 5 volts where USB 2 was only 100 mA. That is still very low power though
