Depends on the OP's configuration. The Sager NP5797 is a better price for performance machine, but the Alienware M17 can be configured to be a better performer, but for a steeper price.

Any company checks to make sure that this is true before refunding. Otherwise, Alienware would be receiving a lot of those calls.

The restocking fee alone is 245 bucks, not to mention shipping costs. *sigh* I checked everything, they must have just added the 280 cause I did not see it there before. 2 months of planning and research and all it took was 20 seconds to say "!$%@#"

If you refused to receive the order, will Alienware still charge you for restocking fees since the box is still seal?

Is Alienware ever the best machine for the money though? Their logo seems to carry a pretty high premium.

not quite true. the m17 pricing was very competitive back when there were other resellers too.

IMPORTANT: All packages shipped from Alienware must be received in person,
at the shipping location provided at time of sale. FedEx will attempt to
deliver the package three times before returning it to Alienware.
Reroutes, indirects, address changes and signature releases are
    prohibited.

Thats what came with the email, but nothing about restocking fees. SO maybe if I dont pick it up?

Well to be fair the new Sager isn't even out yet and is only available for pre-order, even though they said they'd be shipping already. So, its really though not that bad. The 3870's are only a couple gpu's from the 280 in terms of gaming benchmarks, and the rest I just have to be happy with. You know when I made the purchase I said to myself "new things will come out, just be happy with what you got" So i need to remind myself of that, and realize this laptop will last me a long while maybe 6 years+ like my old desktop did. My laptop i currently have Powerbook g4 has lasted me about 5 and runs great to this day.

So, in conclusion, the M17 isn't bad by any standard, but technology will never stop getting cheaper and better, and all you can do is understand that and make the best purchase you can.

Please tell me you got backlit on your keyboard. That is one of the reasons I went with the M17. That, and it comes with a lot of great features not avaliable on Sager, like facial log in (you have to train it first, but mine works great now). I think it looks a lot better also. Plus, if you do come across a little money, you can send your computer back to AW for an upgrade down the road when you'll need some extra power.

I think you should keep the M17 . . . it is a very nice notebook. See my review here:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4824

I also have a lot of experience with the NP579x series of Sager notebooks. They are also excellent machines, though not quite as nice-looking as the M17.

    Dual HD 3870 > GTX 280M. FYI, the GTX 280M isn't a mobile version of the desktop GTX 280M . . . it's more like a desktop 9600GT in terms of power.

I agree he should stick with the M17, I think he'll be very happy. However, I thought the GTX280M was on par with 4870's in Crossfire? The GTX280M is getting almost 12,000 on 3dmark06 with only one card. Hmmm?

    I read this review:
