I have taken out and examined the components in this 17x system and it's all cheap dell junkware, what low end cheap crap, even the Samsung 256gb SSD is made to dell specs,
Plastic, Black plastic SSD, not the shinny silver one that is sold everywhere else, I have 8 gb of 1333 ram from 2 different Chinese vendors. Screen is cheap $29 LCD,, keyboard keys are crooked, Alienware/Dell bios is full of bugs, motherboard is of the lowest quality I have ever seen.
I am on my 3rd 17x in 3 months for failures of the fatal kind, and had to wait 3 weeks to receive replacements![]()
I know it's hard to admit that after spending many thousands of dollars on this machine anyone wants to say, wow what a mistake I make and give it an appropriate 1 star rating.
Surely someone must make a decent laptop???

I will take it off your hands. Pm me
-
So what your saying is that the quality of the SSD depends on how "shiny" it is?
-
I'll buy it for $1000 from you. You ship first.
-
Rengsey R. H. Jr. I Never Slept
You should have returned it. I don't understand why you went through 3 replacements if it's crap.
-
I am waiting for my $5100 refund.
What a total waste of time. I should be given an extra $5000 for all the BS I had to put with the Alienware Costa Rica tech support, when they get tried of not knowing how to fix it , they just hang up the phone. -

Luckily, my IQ is high enough to type this. About to become an M17x owner. They're not cheap junk, you've just had an extreme case of bad luck. Ask for a refund. There are plenty of other manufacturers who offer high performance laptops. We're all sorry this has happened to you. It does suck to pay that much money for something and have trouble with it.
-
I see all the guys with the high IQ are coming out of the woodwork to defend the decisions.
Go for it. -

Bad Alienware quality or poor customer service have nothing to do with 3rd (and not 3th right?) world country people or $2.00 per hour wage.
If you dont like it, return it.

I don't disagree that for the money AW demands for these notebooks they should be perfect.
Before getting mine I came here and read up on the issues, and I still wanted it. But I traded my $2200 uMBP for this $4200 M17x so my expectations were lower. The _only_ thing I use this notebook for is games (and it plays everything very well) and web surfing. I would never do anything important on it.
My only surprise was the non-transferable warranty. Oh well.
'Unfortunately, the Alienware Warranty for all systems is not transferable as explained in the Terms and Conditions Agreement, inside the Alienware Product Manual.'

That is dated 5/2009, before Dell took over and it was the old Alienware. The M15X/M17X and all future systems now use Dell's warranty system not the old AW system.
-
Yeah the new Alienwares are really Dell machines so there are zero issues with warranty transfers which is a blessing unlike the old ones...
-
then go buy one of them apples because you know, they are perfect and everything and there like no problems with them. or if you dont want any problems then dont ever buy a computer and you wont ever have any problems with computers again.
-
It's not junk
there is a reason it hold multiple recoreds
I'll leave it at that. -
-
The system itself, the M17x, is an amazing system. You just have terrible luck I suppose, sorry about that though
though they should of built a stronger system for you if you payed that much money.

Mine is 99.9% perfect. It will become 100% perfect when I can play Mass Effect for over 8 hours, without any interruption. So far my limit is 7:30 before some background process causes it to hang.

Shesh sure sounds like my frist two Alienware laptops Computerone. I Payed for one in December 06. This was just after Dell just took over Alienware so most of the rules where still Under Alienware.

I've got the MacBook Pro, and when i took it apart the HDD is not "shinny" either.
i was SO happy with both M17x and my MBP, but bow i don't know what to do. I think i have to return them both.
My main problem is how do i find out if the HDD in my new notebook is shinny or not?? -

Back to work Monday - no more fun for me (or not quite as much).
My M17x plays games like a stallion.
If you guys are right about the warranty, then I got the deal of the century (this thing has 33 months of on-site service left.Attached Files:

Where can I get a "shinny" SSD? Whats the read/write speeds on the "shinnys?" I'm thinking that would be a nice upgrade to my M17X
-
Ya me too I'll be getting an Intel extrime 32 Gb SSD but now I'm not to sure I been doing some search about it and for what I been reading it's not that shinny
