I received my 9750 4-11-09 (Ordered 3-17-09)
Lower end model, I'm not a gamer. I just wanted the Alienware style and lots of space for multimedia/video stuff.
WXGA 1440x900 Ordered (Received WUXGA 1920x1200)
Intel Core2 CPU T7600 @ 2.33GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 8700M GT 512MB (Single)
2GB Memory
Dual Drives Non-RAID (128 Solid State Samsung, 500GB Samsung)
Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561A ATA Device (8x Dual Layer Burner w/LightScribe)
Intel Pro Wireless 3945 a/b/g
Internal Hi-Def Audio
The notebook is very nicely built, not a mark on it, perfection and everything works great. I was not happy that it came with the higher resolution screen, but I was absolutely dreading having to send it back.
I played around with it for several days, but I just don't like the way the screen looks with the resolution set to lower than the native resolution, text is blurry. Tried tons of different drivers, some make it better some make it worse. Nothing makes it suit me.
I imaged the drives before it was booted the first time. Installed XP, installed Vista back and forth a dozen times. Finally restored it back to the factory out of the box setup.
So I call Alienware Saturday 4/18 talked to a very nice and knowledgeable tech guy, Dennis. He could not help me because it's a customer service issue.
Called customer service today. The first person I talked to looked it up said I had order XGA and that they had sent UXGA (I know I got an upgrade for free, but I didn't want it). They transfer me to another guy, I swear I could not hardly understand a word he was saying. I finally got so frustrated that I said transfer me to someone else. Waited on hold for eeeeeeever.
Hung up called back, this time a lady says I got what I ordered and I'll have to pay shipping and repair cost, I said I know exactly what the hell I ordered, I'm not paying a dime for Alienware's mistake, got more run around. I can't repeat exactly what I said because at this point my head was ready to explode. Short version, I said I want to talk to your boss, she said hold on.
On hold for another long wait. Same lady comes back on, says supervisor is not available, but I can send the notebook back and order a new one. She says someone will call me with in 24 hours to go over the details. At least that is what I think she said, cause she couldn't speak English very well.
I know without a shadow of doubt that I ordered it with the WXGA 1440x900 screen. If I have to pay a dime extra for shipping, I'll tell them to keep it, and I'll look else where for a new notebook.
Just sharing my experience with Alienware, and venting a little bit. I'll update if/when this is straightened out.
Thanks

I feel your pain, but..... You ordered an m9750 in 2009? Why not get an M17? It's the same chassis, at the same price, with better technology.

Just to play devil's advocate... Why don't you want the better screen?
If I had've been shipped a WUXGA by mistake, I would have been kissing strangers in the street (though I'm not sure they'd let me take my laptop to lockup lol =P )...
You'll never get a good look running a screen at greater than native res, but why not run it at 1920x1200? Especially if you're not gaming, your card can handle it just fine...
Why don't you like the higher res screen?
If it's readability, you can increase the size of icons/text easily enough by (from memory) holding ctrl and using the mousewheel in web browsers, and holding the windows key(?) and scrolling the wheel when on your desktop... -
ill trade screens ......
be more then happy to -
It is really easy to do as I showed in my how-to.

vista is not crappy any more i do not reccomend going back to XP for anything other then old games
i was serious about tradeing screens
EDIT o dang -
Heh, yeah the 1920 x 1200 can be a bit small for some people. I know my dad is always on my case as to why I got that size for the notebook because he can hardly see anything on it. I love it though and it is definitely a better screen.
Good luck with getting it changed though, can't see it being a huge problem personally if it is not what you ordered. Whether what you got being better is irrelevant, it is not what you ordered and AW has an obligation to fix that imo. -
when you got your laptop it should have a shortcut to my AW pc information check there and on your invoice
-
YOu know you could change the DPI setting on your screen; that will take care of the "everything is too small" problem.

....lol actually if he is not gaming at ALL then the m9750 is thinner and lighter with a smaller power brink with slightly better battery life so it would be better far as multimedia just movies and music .....
gaming it would be crushed and killed but .... yea
the m17 is better for video and music editing then the m9750
the m17 does offer full support with windows xp btw ... the OCZ Whitebook had XP drivers -
Oops, forgot about that "not a gamer" part. Nevermind, carry on.

As most of you know, I too got the lower res screen on my M17 so printed text wouldn't be so small. I was really surprised how aweful the screen looked. Colors weren't vibrant, viewing angles sucked, and blacks looked grey.
I guess I was used to how good the high res screen looked on my m9750 and that's why I switched screens.
The difference in clarity and color saturation is night and day.
