Hmm... What pads and grease did the trick?
Confused how the core temp reading can be affected by the inductors on a separate plate. The core has its own heatsink assembly and pipes in Clevo machines.
Man I just want this fixed -_-

The PCB will spread heat from the inductors to the memory chips I suppose since they have large contact pads but it may be more of an issue on alienware machines since they don't have a heatpipe cooling that area.
I was able to over volt my memory without heat issues after all. -
-
I just can't see any reason in Clevo machines that the core temperature could be affected so significantly by weak inductors when they're on an entirely separate heatsink. Hot inductors absolutely would explain memory errors but not the molten lava core???

Until you go test it, you will never know.
And your machine can be made to boost just like any other machine can. Whether you want to do that is another question. -
They offered me 780M cards for 95 a piece but I don't want to drop even more cash into this machine... What would you do? Grudgingly pay the 190 for two 780M and call it a day?
I think if I get these replaced with 880s, I can probably sell the machine for 3500 or so and that should be more than enough for me to turn around and buy 970M SLI... Its still a loss of money for me but it would be the same expenditure to get much faster cards... Plus I wouldn't get an MX CPU again.

Yes, you can sell it and then buy another one with 970M's or 980M's once they come out. Pretty sure that's what is going to happen. The question is...Will Clevo go to the x99 or just call it quits.
And at the end of the day...970M's still have to be faster than 780M's. Along with the nice battery saving features the new Maxwell cards bring. -

Sounds like you have a plan.
My M18x has been with me since 2011. And if the 980M's fit and I still have this machine. Then it will get another upgrade. Far cheaper than buying new machines every 6 to 12 months.
Edit:
Duh, just looked at your signature and seen you have an MX cpu. lol. Completely forgot you have a 9377. -
I emailed them back and they are actually going to check the status of the new cards and see what options I would have at that point. I really don't think Sager is trying to screw me, I believe the older parts legitimately cost them more as they said, it's just frustrating from my standpoint.
I have to say that I'm impressed with Xotic though. Xotic really does push to try to make things happen for their customers. I don't think I'll ever buy from another company again. Customer service is huge for me and they have by far the best I've ever experienced. Now lets see what Sager has to say.

I asked them (Xoticpc) if I could get this screen with any other card other than the 880's and they wouldn't budge. -

looking forward to the 980M test run review

Cards are only shipping in complete systems at the moment due to restricted supply. More will become available later and people can start to play more in current systems
-
If they run anything like the desktop version on stock vbios, then we are in very good shape. testing 3 980's now.

I want to put the GTX 880M Alienware M18xR1, will this card work in my laptop? Can you give me the vBios GTX 880M from slv7. Can't download it from TECH INFERNO. Thank you.

Just find a topic at TI you ate interested in and you will soon have your 5 posts covered.
Cheers! -

And if you are buying new the 980M is much better. 880M has some issues. -

Just be patient. -

Since you're still waiting on the parcel, have some patience. Like deadsmiley said it takes a couple days because it's not a very active forum.
Also if you have the option I'd just send the parcel back and ask for a refund.deadsmiley likes this. -

Different regions have different laws regarding the return of unwanted goods to shops, usually an individual would not take it back though.
-
-
Yes it is, runs too hot and power throttles like crazy. Modded vbios takes care of the power issue but then temps go through the roof.
Since the parcel is still on its way, as long as you don't open it, I'm sure whoever sold it to you would be willing to work something out with you as long as you keep polite and be reasonable. -
-
Work with the seller to arrange for a return shipping and refund.
-
-
Just politely ask if you can return for a refund, you don't have to give any reason. If he says no offer a 10% "restocking fee" and see if he changes his mind.

I don't know why you have a problem, I installed the GTX 880M in your Alienware M18xR1. Works with any drivers without problems, never drops FPS and the temperature is no more 73C in the toughest games and 3DMark.

It's always tough to justify buying a new card upgrade around the launch of a new generation, of course they may not be compatible with your machine.
The 880M is a bit of a controversial card around here with regards to speeds/power consumption and turbo level. -
Not sure if 880M owners that are still struggling with product malfunction are still having issues or not, but this seems to have helped some 880M owners.

I wish I saw this thread before!
I have fully working 880M SLI. I just wish the AW18 did not have the 325W power limit. I encountered a system shutoff with GPUs @ stock 1.0v 993Mhz and CPU overclocked in FC4.
I am okay with running the CPU lower as its the GPUs that shine in games. It is related to the core/processor current limits.
The highest I've had my 880Ms is 1.093v @ 1146 core and 1553Mhz memory which were at 97% utilization in 3DM11, and they ran at 65c in -10c ambient temps. Huge credit to John and svl7.

How did you disabled boost? I would like to do same thing. Did you just set p0 clocks to same as p2 and it works that way?

I found it before and description says that it has more overclocking capabilities and removed power limits but nothing about boost. It's disabled in modified VBIOS permanently?
-
Yes, the cards run at 993Mhz all the time in games. With stock BIOS they were underperforming and not maintaining full GPU utilization, which in turn lowers the GPU clock.

Thanks, I will downclock them to 780M with disabled boost to give them longer life. I want to use them a looong time.
-
I have the modded vbios from svl7/john. In games I cap my fps at 60 and the GPU does clock down below 993 at times when it can hold 60fps in less demanding situations.
-
Ah so I can cap FPS at 45 and GPU will automatically downclock if it can provide more than 45 fps so it won't run so hot?
