I just thought I would let you all know. I've had my m15x since the beginning of February, and I travel for work. I usually fly out on Monday, and fly back home on Friday. Since January, I've been traveling every week. That's 1 roundtrip a week, always with at least one connection on each trip. I purchased my m15x for school, gaming, and for portability. It has held up beautifully.
Through all of the storing under the seat in the front of me, all of the security check points, all of the overhead bins, through the dirty work sites I go to(Paper mills, power plants, etc), through all of the hotels rooms/cafes/restaurants, it looks and works just like new.
If you take care of her, keep her in the sleeve, and keep her in a decent laptop case(Oakley AP Computer bag), she's good, unless she turns out to be a lemon like mine did...and have the hinge snap....

Lol, that's the difference between quality and cheap laptops, quality ones are meant to be abused (or more like tested or pushed) while cheap ones are meant to be pampered and looked after.
I'm glad she's holding up for you (since when were computers feminine?) -
I thought all laptops were females...glad to hear your m15x is holding up. By chance do you have one with the 8800?
Edit: I am with stupid <- Read your sig and saw it is. -
And just because I'm not willing to throw her around, for the sake of finding out her threshold, doesn't mean she HAS to be babied... I'm only speaking from my experience... Who wouldn't baby a brand new BADASS laptop?
All men's toys are female...unless you're into other stuff..Kidding...kidding... -
Computers are females because everything plugs in, not out.
Inappropriate? -
-
Same here!! im too, always travel around since my university are kinda far (need an airplane to go there) and only come back home after 3 months or 2... currently im using a Targus 17" bagpack (recommend by forum members) and before this i was using an Asus computer bag (its weird, i know) with the same alienware sleeve tug inside... the 17" was a perfect protection and travel partner compare to a 15" since the battery are kinda bulky and big..
i was kinda worry that my m15x would get damage or something since it made out of plastic and all... and there was one time i was worried about going through the security scan laser, i thought it would do damage to my blue-ray optical drive or other system...
when you keep the m15x on the overhead compartment during flying, arent you worried that it will get knocked by other people luggage or being stolen???? i always keep it in front of my seat....
hahaha, sorry for being a person that worry too much. Guess your right, that she is a babe but to me probably as a thing that have my own bloodline~~~ lolz.. -
Thumbs up for the Oakley AP Bag! Mine has kept all of my laptops safe.
-
Good to hear "she" is more stubborn than she looks like!
-
I only got to travel with my System a few. Although my M90 has gone around the world a few times. From my experiences so far, the M15x is no where near as travel worthy as other laptops I have owned. When using it on flights I had to hold onto the screen so it wouldn't wobble. The case is flimsy when you pull it out of the bag, I always feel like I am going to put my fingers through the top or bottom. I always leave it in a sleeve to help with the scratches. And I can guarranty you teh Security Guys at the airport won't be nice to it they pass it through the Xray machine. To me there is no way this Laptop will hold up to teh abuse it will see with my travels. And that is just my thought, since I bounce from platform to platform and helicopter to bush planes. There is no way this system will hold up. I just hope I am wrong, and all you guys have great luck with your systems.
-
And Jayonhavok, I definitely agree with the scratches comment, in that, there aren't any. The multiple times I've beat mine up have resulted in nary an imperfection from when I took it out of the box. -
As for NewfieJudd, luckily I've never had any security guard touch my laptop while going through Security. I do have to agree with you on the wobble though. I pulled my laptop out for a flight once, and that was the last time. -
I have babied every laptop I had regardless of brand.
-
I take mine around with me every day. Leave home, go to office, go to different customer sites, back to the office and then back home. I've also had mine since mid Feb everything is still great.
-
So agree with what you are saying GRB regarding experiences with the M15x, but if you wanna put experience to experience I think I would be miles ahead. Last year I racked up over 300,000 AeroMiles you do do that on domestic flights unless your the Pilot. -
That's fine, as I said, it's perfectly possible it wouldn't be good for your travel purposes because I definitely don't pretend to know your travel schedule.
btw have you come to a conclusion as to what you're gonna do now post-m15x-saga? -
I really don't know yet. I really really loved my M15x. The power it had was amazing, but it's the details I was willing to pay the money for. AW are still trying to talk me into keeping it, and I have agreed with them to give it one more try.(They promised me some serious upgrades for my troubles) Although I maxxed it out when I purchased it besides the Blu Ray. (No 1920X1200 Screen) So I am curious to see what they will put in it.
I just hope I can work through those initail issues I had and get this thing to where I wanted it to be. But right now there is nothing that tops this beast in a 15.4" system.
I am even looking at getting my brother in law to make me an all aluminum/Magnesioum Alloy case to replace the cheap plastic it came with. Will keep everyone posted on that Saga once it begins.
Just like you and I have spoken before GRB, the M15x is a true work of art although it's just not for everyone. -
A new case, now that would be something. But whatever it takes, I hope that your saga is able to come to a good conclusion.
-
-
It's just an Idea now. But my brother in law works in a plant that may be able to C&C something or mold something for us.. I am just going to start with something small and maybe strenghten certain Areas if possible first. And then take it from there.
-
I've found that mine isn't super highly travel worthy, and I've had it since the beginning of February. As stated in another thread, I have a couple spots with the paint chipped off, as well as a few places with dents, and I baby the hell out of this thing.
-
I'd never insult someone's computer.
-
-
You're killing the O-Zone! Anyways, glad to hear it's a good built computer that can last, I plan to take it on trips too, once I get it.
-
-
I think he's referring to the fact that airplane trips (along with practically anything a person does) harm the environment... however ozone destruction does technically happen via CFCs and aerosols, not carbon dioxide
-
-
oh heh, I see that now. I read your first sentence (Uh.....wha?) but not your second one (yeah... I know...). I'm a little anxious to post
-
.
-
wouldnt it be heavy?? or probably not...
urgh! The checking on my laptop by the security guard happen to me twice, last year and this year... because they find it a bit freaky and when i take out the laptop out of the bag, they keep on staring the alienware-head... lolz -
Newfiejudd: Hail fellow international traveler!
I am a frequent international traveler as well. I had (still do, but don't use it) a Dell d505, and that plastic POS had a great keyboard and held up dang well across my travels. (5.6lbs). Wobbly 1600x1200 LCD with a graphics chip (take a long walk off a short bridge Intel. Make a GFX solution that doesn't suck why don't ya?that only supports 1024x768 (some idiot at DELL really missed that one, but a hacked debian driver can crank the 1600 goodness)
the dell a victim of about .75" of screen wobble (if I lift it towards me and let is bounce back, the top of the lid moves about .75")
My current toy is a Gateway C-140x with about 1" of screen wobble. I still use it mid flight, and even though it weighs 9.5 lbs. with the 12 cell battery (lord knows I love this thing) I bring it everywhere. The tabletness of it turns heads everywhere, and wacom is the most glorious thing since the laptop was invented. Sturdy little thing, but heavy, not such a hot keyboard (it is raised between tab and tilde, and low by the bottom arrow), and wobbly.
1) given that it is lighter, will the m15x be more portable than my smaller c-140x?
2) how many inches of screen wobble are there with the m15x?
3) how is the keyboard with respect to "clickyness" (on a scale of marshmallow to manual typewriter)
4) can this notebook really not be used on a plane? (admittedly, I use my c-140x in tablet mode...)
TIA to any travelers who respond. -
Lethal Lottery Notebook Betrayer
im calling tech support because this sleep/hibernate mode issues are very annoying.
-
2) The screen wobble was really bad through light chop on the flight. I would expect it wobbled about 1" to 1"25". I did have to hold the hold the screen while using the PC. It seemed like it would shake off if I never. Maybe typing a PIA.
3) Surprisingly my keyboard is fine. It misses a few letters here and there although I am not sure if it was just me adjusting to a new Keyboard. The corner is minor and teh textile feel of the keys is great. I find them not to mushy at all. Just the right amount stiffness.
4) This computer can be used on a plane, it works quite well for watching movie. One thing that surprised me was in Stealth mode I could plug into the AC outlet of the plane and not trip it out. (Anything over 70 watts will)
Hope this helps ya. -
Nice to hear u travel so much. I have not brought the m15x along cause I could not find a good plane adapter with this high wattage. -
Well most international flight from Canada and the US have a standard US wall plug in. Unfortunatly I don't have alot of experince with recent flight around Europe.
Although most newer Boeing and Airbus aircraft come equipped with the US wall plugs under teh seat or on the seat in front of you. -
thanks for the info. repped

just in case someone checks this...
Do not buy the Belkin Laptop Travel Adapter F5L010 for the m15x... it simply can not power it sufficiently unless you're running on internal graphics. Mine trips out on external gpu even when running on stealth mode. Even thought the Belkin website says that it can power the m15x, the F5L010 is rated for 69W max output. In stealth, with 8800mGTX, i frequently hit 80s while running some apps or benchmarks. With stealthmode off, it frequently hits 116W.
I guess if you're traveling with a lot of electronics, you use the F5L010 to power them all, and you don't plan on using external graphics, it's ok. -
"Lazarus, wake up and walk! - Jesus.
Jay doesn't has a m15x anymore, since it got cracked. Beside, this topic is ancient. -
Hahah, I didn't notice the dates on this thread until I got to these last few posts.
For a second there, I thought Alienware paid him off to have a 'change of heart'. I wanted in on that deal. :[ -
same here... as i was reading the threads... i wondered what made him change his heart and sing a different tune...
thought he had a BAD experience with AW... -
Haha... I can't believe this thread is still around... Wish I could add "are over" to the title...
There, I edited the original post....lol -
This is too funny. I started readin this post. Got to my actual post and was like. "hmm remember writing something like this once" LMAO..
