For some reason when I used to put the m17x in stealth mode, it only downclocked the CPU not the GPU. Even if I unpluged it, the GPUs remained on full clocks. Can anybody check if theirs the same?

But when you're on stealth mode, wouldnt the 8800M be disabled and using the Intel X3100?

    IT does both.
Stealth mode downclocks extra cycles that would be otherwise using up extra space.
And yes on stealth mode the 8800ms should be disabled

No, the m17x does not have the Intel X3100 because it has the PM965 chipset not the GM965 which is the one in the m15x.

    90C for the GPUs?
Sounds scary to me, but if AW considers it safe, than I guess my max 75C is perfectly ok :)

and in order to disable the 8800 for the x3100 you would have to restart. the stealth mode button isnt some magic button that can instantly turn off the 8800 and power on the x3100  but this feature is not on the m17x.

The dual 8800m GTX cards on my M17X have never reached 90C even when playing Crysis. Usually in the low 80'sC when playing games. Otherwise in the 60's.

maybe the m17x's stealth mode turns off one of the cards. the m9750 turns off one of the cards when you unplug it so im guessing it will turn off a card instead of downclocking the card?

Well, maybe that is what is happening. I don't have the m17x anymore to check.

Can someone with an m17x find out exactly what does the stealth mode button do?

Has anyone written a descriptive review on the m17x or a thread that has some pics, considering ordering one and maybe I missed a thread or something that has this info. Also, was the m15x originally ripley design only? If so, how long did it take before they released the skullcap design (just to give me a ballpark figure on how long they will be before they release skullcap for the m17x, which imo, a black skullcap is really good looking :D)

I love the M17X's variable color illuminated keyboard! :)

I own an XPS M1730, and its hardware is similar, but the keyboard only illuminates in white :(

I've ordered the m17x, placed my order online on Friday18th July, currently i'm in stage 2 but, Armando informed me that it takes approximately 2 working days for the "phase shift" system to acknowledge your order. I know the money has been taken off of my credit card because my wife checked and it had been taked within 30 mins of placeing the order.

As soon as i get mine i intend to do a review, from unboxing, turning on for the first time, to see how long boot time is (i intend to tweak Vista slightly to see what the boot time difference ends up at, following Les' guide), to shut-down time. I'll also run various bench's and install Crysis and see what very high looks like lol

I will then "test" each feature and give a score out of 6, 5.9 being the highest you can score.... oh, wait that's how Vista does it lol

I'm not going to pick every tiny detail to pieces but, i will be objective.

If you guys have any questions you want answering, please feel fre to ask me?

    OB

Hi man from the Dell boards LOL. :D

But anyway, how are you liking your M1730 so far?

And after seeing this M17X, which one do you prefer more? M1730 or M17X?

    Cheers bro.

I don't know what eleron911 thinks but I prefer my m1730. For the same hardwares, I pay >$1000 less than m17x. IMO, m17x design isn't worth that $1000. Sager is still cheaper and better.

I have an XPS M1730, and between it and the m17x, it's a toss-up. Both seem to have solid build quality, nice exterior lighting, etc. From the aesthetics standpoint, the m17x probably has a slight edge given that its illuminated keyboard has variable color settings, while the M1730 has only a white-light. However, from a performance standpoint, the M1730 can already OC to 3.2ghz stable, while OC'ing is still currently locked out of the m17x based on what I've read.

It's difficult to go wrong with either unit :D

The one thing that i think makes the M1730 bad, is that dell use low grade screens.

That's the only reason why i would go for the m17x!

It's to bad, cuz i really had a powerful, & hot looking lappy for way cheaper!
