Firstly may I say a huge "Cheers" to all of you who have provided feedback, input and discussion re my various questions?

    Thanks! :D

    There, did it anyway! :p

Hearing a lot of conflicting views in Reviews etc. on whether the 1920*1200 resolution is actually worth anything if I don't have a Blu-Ray Drive.

What are the benefits / pitfalls of either 1920 or 1440 Resolution?

Are the twin 8700s going to drive games at that resolution, or should I save a few more quid and opt for 1440*900 and end up with a screen more aligned with the Video Cards' capabilities?

To 1920 or not to 1920, that is the question...............

(Technical arguments or personal experience are appreciated, but if you just want to say "I have one and it is fooking ace", that's cool, too!) ;)

    Clean.

(Soooooooooooo close to ordering my m9750)

Well if you're asking in terms of whether 2x8700s can game at 1920x1200, the answer is no. Even a single 8800m cant cope with that res and max settings on the newest games.

1440x900 could be good for gaming, but it is a rather small resolution for a 17" screen. If you watch any quality films (not just blu ray) you will get a much better experience.

So i would advise you to get the WUXGA screen and just game in lower-than-native resolutions, with AA on a decent setting (thats what its meant for anyway).

To be honest if you're not one of the people who must play with everything on max you will be satisfied by the visual quality/performance. The only game i havent set on max settings (not resolution ofc) is crysis, which gets around 40-50fps on all med 1440x900.

    Hey Clean,
I would go for the 1920 by 1200 simply because of the clearview screen. I'm not sure if you prefer a matte or glossy finish, but I think the glossy makes the colors appear more bold and fluid. The 1920 by 1200 screen is a glossy screen, and the other isn't.
Also, I'd have to agree dozzen on the resolutions. There's no way any new games are going to run at 1920 x1200. You'll have to settle for 1440 x 900 or lower......However, if you're running a movie, go wild on the resolution.
So, this bring us to the question, "Is Bluray worth the expensive drive?" You may be able to justify it with the burner, but seeing as how discs are 20 dollars a pop, it may cripple you. If you're looking for a way to cut the cost a little, you may want to just go with a DVD burner and upgrade to a Bluray later.

    Hope this helps,
    Gabe

According to the UK Website both resolutions come with Clearview Technology.

If I have to play games in 1440, and that is, after all, why I am forking out so much on an AW, then still not convinced about 1920.

    Confused!

    Help!

    Hi Clean,
I realise that the website does make mention of that. But during the orderin of my system, they clarified that the smaller screen is a matte finish. Maybe someone can clarify this for the UK.

Both screens come with the glossy finish. My wife has the 1440 and I have the 1920. I very much prefer the 1920. The colors seem to be better and the text is razor sharp. I have watched standard DVD's on both screens and they look much better on the 1920 screen. I am able to run some of my slightly older games at native resolution and they look great. Newer games I am running at 1440x900 with most setting max and it still looks great. The screen real estate the WUXGA gives is well worth it. If the text is too small you can always adjust settings in windows to compensate. Go with the higher rez, you won't be sorry.

I would recommend the 1920x1200 screen. I have that with my m9750 and I run most of my games at either 1920x1080 (HD1080p) or 1600x1200 with all AA turned off( you don't need it at those resolutions and it improves game performance). I run them using a single 7950gtx video card with smooth performance. I am not sure if the 8700 card can do the same as I have heard that it is a somewhat slower card compared to the 7950gtx.

The detail and picture quality is worth the price difference in screens in my opinion.

@Travis - No offense but you pretty much come up with a new excuse as to why you returned your laptop every day or so. You had 1440x900 resolution on your M9750, you said it a few lines up from your previous post.

@OP - Don't listen to Travis, he makes up some of the stuff he posts. I believe he once posted that he owned an Asus G1s. I have the 1920x1200 resolution and I love it. The colors are much better than my Veiwsonic VG2030wm screens and I actually am really used to the small text now and I love it. The real estate is also amazing. I am able to keep a paper open in MSword, research on firefox, and Pidgin (AIM) open at the same time because of all the room.

In my opinion the 1920x1200 is great. By the way I have used (1280 x 800) (1680x1050) and (1920x1200). Out of all of those I really like the 1920x1200 on a 17" screen. If you are getting a 15" go for a 1680x1050, but you aren't so that doesn't apply.

Same resolution is same desktop space no matter what the size of the screen is. The difference between two different size screens with same resolution is the size of the displayed content (larger text, windows...)

yeah, the 1920 screen is very nice. and i don't know what people are talking about, i run all my games at 1920 x 1200. when i tested out crysis i configured it to run at 1920 x 1200 and got 30-40 fps.

actually, this screen with full AA and AF on cs 1.6 made it look like a different game (in a positive way).

This is kind of unrelated but I couldn't find anywhere else to post this so this is what I'm trying. I have an Area 51 m9750 and need a new AC adapter - I would prefer one that doesn't add 3 pounds to the already heavy system. I can't find any website that sells an adapter listed as compatible with this computer. I am trying to find other computer models that are more mainstream that use the same size adapter/tip. I have an iGo and would love if someone knows what tip size of theirs fits my computer :) Thanks for the help.

If you have an iGo that is 180 to 200 watts I'd like one too! But the truth is that the Alienware tip is really custom, or the hole is picky. tried a targus replacement that was the exact same AC adapter, just with interchangeable tips, and it didnt work. So Im sorry to say that as far as I know Alienware is the only place to get the AC adapter.
