After a few days of getting the Alienware M17x it's suddenly become really slow and started to lag badly. So i decided to do a full system recovery to see if it would sort the problem out but it didn't do that properly because afterwards even though it started up as if it was fresh from the factory it didn't format the solid state drives properly. When i switched it on for the first time when i got it from the factory it showed 430GB available, after i did a full system recovery it showed 370GB available instead of 430GB. Plus after doing a full system recovery my M17x is still very slow and lagging badly. Surely a full system recovery should sort out any problems like this. Does anyone know what might be causing this and what's going on? Is there anything else i can do to sort this problem out?

might not have partitioned it properly. also change you performance setting to High and make sure you have SLI on.

Hi thanks for the response. I didn't touch the partitions and i checked SLI is on and performance setting is on high but it's still very slow. Also before i was running the laptop sometimes with SLI off and and performance on blanced and it ran fine. Also at the moment i'm just trying to do very basic things to test it out like trying to open the web browser, so SLI or performance settings won't really make any difference to that.

no i did a full system recovery which is ment to delete all your files.

I haven't visited any sites but i did download one game torrent i wonder if that might of had a trojan in it or something. But if a trojan did get on my computer a full system recovery is ment to get rid of any viruses or spyware.

    Hi daz7781,
I would probably recommend restoring one more time. It does sound like a partition was either accidently created or not removed. Also, after a full restore, you always want to make sure that you're on your discrete graphics (260/280s) and not on your integrated graphics (9400). Then, switch the power settings to high and check to see that hybrid sli is set to boost instead of powersave. If all else fails, you might want to delete all the partitions and attempt to do a fresh restore.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

Switch Off your computer, remove the battery and the power supply for 20sec and put it back switch on your M17x and all will be fine.

I've restored twice no difference and i'm losing even more storage space and i don't know why. i have two partitions i checked one is the C drive and the other i presume is the recovery partition. The main partition is showing the maximum available storage space as 460GB which is the same as it was when i first got it but there's only 362GB available and i don't know whats taking up all that space because i've just done a system recovery and i haven't installed anything. Also all my settings are on maxium.

Daz7781 I think it's time you call AW support and have them look at it. If your purchase is recent just return it and ask for a new one if it's not an easy fix.

You should never waste your time on trying things on your own for too long when something like this happens. If after two restores then you are in the same condition it's probably the hardware at fault.

    Call AW...

I've spoken to Alienware and they are going to send me a new one. I'm definitely not in stealth mode i checked that. The laptop shouldn't be keeping all the system files because i did a full recovery which is ment to delete all the files. Can't figure out what is going on with it but at leaat i'm getting a new one.

well the most common issues of losing storage space constantly is

    1. Virus's (but you said you restored twice so this should not be the case)
    2. Stealth Mode/Stand by/Hibernation (but you said this wasn't the case either)
    3. bad hard drive, once sectors start to go bad they continue to do so thus losing more and more diskspace, have you tried running a full chkdsk or spinrite on your hard drive? I believe this is most likely your culprit.

EDIT: just realized you have an SSD drive, so i'm not sure if number 3 still pertains to your situation as SSD stores it's information in a different way.

Yeah i recovered a few times so that should wipe out any viruses. I'm not in any power saving modes although i tried them before and they never slowed down the laptop. I'll be surprised if it's bad solid state drives because the laptop is brand new. How did you know i got solid state drives?

You stated in one of your posts on the first page that you had a ssd. But just because something is new does not mean that something can't be bad, I'm not sure about the sypmtoms of SSD's when they go bad since they are a new tech for me, my 2x256 ssd is my first venture with them. I'd guess if all other avenues are covered a bad drive would be it.
