Wouldn't you be running ridiculously hot with an OC like that?

    no

The M17 is its sub par cooling runs 90c @ 3.3-4 max

So the M17x can easily handle it

90C is too high. 80 max on a CPU. But yeah, the m17x has fantastic cooling, so I guess it's worth finding out.

Out of curiosity, can any proc on the m17x be overclocked or is it just the QX9300?

ant processor can be overclocked . the extreme CPU's have unlocked multipliers so you can just OC the CPU if you want to where as non extreme cPUs have to be OC'd using FSB which overclocks the whole system

Aye, which is very cool about the m17x. i can OC my T9600 to 3.33GHz. Which in my mind is fast as hell.

    Well that sucks. Guess I can't really OC with a T9600 :(

I may have to buy a CPU from shirley at some point (assuming I go with the m17x).

EDIT: Clauss posted while I was posting :p. Clauss, do you do FSB OC then?

So you don't need an extreme CPU to OC safely then?

you know those settings in the OP only give you either a 3.06 or 3.2 not 3.5 or 3.6, atleast that is what my machine shows

no it still locks my machine up at anything past 3.06. inorder to get past voltages will have to be upped i'm assuming

If you can bring your memory down as well that could give you a ton more stability , i had no idea you could lower the memory speeds if i read him correctly .

yes with the qx9300 you can change multipliers, memory and fsb freq.

As an example for me to get my old desktop quadcore to 3.6ghz i had to drop the memory down to 800mhz from 1066 and had i known this i would have told you to drop the memory speeds. So its worth a try . Also you can try things like dropping the multiplier down even further and then cranking up the FSB higher. i havent seen the bios obviously so im not sure what your even looking at interms of options but just more suggestions .

with my whitebook. i could boot on 12.5x 3.33ghz but it would ran unstable. the highest i got it to go was 12x 3.2ghz stable and then using setfsb to bring it to 3.25ghz. after that it was useless but because of only changing the fsb in windows. i couldn't boot any higher to try it. (that and it never came to mind.)

i think that is almost identical to mine

FYI Jwest you can run a cpu at 90 degrees all the time, wont burn out. They are rated to at least 100 degrees
