I just tried installing the newly-released 185.81 drivers from NVIDIA's web site and it doesn't work on the m15x with the 8800M GTX. Device Manger would show an error #43 and the driver would fail to start. Just want to let people know before they go through the trouble of installing it.

Same issue here, and none of the 185.xx drivers have worked for me, I have tried modded .inf's, manually installing the drivers, and even making the computer think its a 9800gt or another card... every time-- error code 43...

I'm now assuming that this is an Alienware problem, and I think we all know what that means for us getting a fix...

I can't get any 185.xx drivers to work either.. currently i'm using dox's 182.05 which seems to be the fastest here..

    Guys,

Happened to have a conversation with an nVidia field rep last night who was at one of the local computer stores...

He suggests that each of us submit a ticket directly to nVidia tech support:

    1) go to: http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php

    2) Click on the Ask a Question tab
    3) Click on Continue
    4) Fillout the form with as much detail as possible, including the Hardware ID of your graphics card from Device Manager.

The form will cough up a listing of generic answers, however at the bottom of it you have to option to submit it to a technician.

He indicated that reports of issues submitted in this matter are forwarded directly to their engineers.

I've already submitted my ticket and suggest others to do the same. Once they start receiving a couple it should start raising red flags on their end.

It would be nice if Alienware would work with NVIDIA to support these drivers on their mobile systems going forward. These drivers take away all the finger-pointing between the PC manufacturer and NVIDIA when it comes to the mobile graphics cards. Alienware would be doing their mobile customers a big favor by not forcing them to use either outdated drivers or hacked ones found on the Internet.

Yeah, I too am having this problem. I should note that I'm not using the AW software at all -- CC, OSD or anything -- so there shouldn't be a conflict there. Must be something else.

    Guys,

Just heard back from Dileep at nVidia...

They are investigating this issue and have forwarded it on to their programmers and the driver development team. They hope to have it corrected in the next release.

In the interim, they're recommending that we use this nVidia release:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista_179.48_beta.html

or Alienware OEM version 167.55 which can be obtained from MyHive.

They also recommended that everyone experiencing an issue with 185.85 contact nVidia technical support (through the link I provided earlier). They're trying to obtain additional information to determine if the issue is affecting all Alienware 8800m GTX cards or certain revisions of those cards.

I'll pass along anything additional I received. Hopefully the hardware folks at Alienware and the programmers at nVidia can get together and get this fixed for all of us.

Dileep had me send them copies of the original Alienware INF, and printouts of the hardware information for the card from device manager.

So far I haven't heard anything else.

Since 179.48 works, If they can just get it fixed by the next release I'd be happy.

Is 179.48 for Vista 32-bit only? If so, what are the best "working" Vista x64 nVidia drivers?

NOTE: do not install the 186.08 driver, it will immediately cause a BSOD and you won't be able to boot to the desktop, thus making you have to do a system restore.

Report to you guys: There's no way to get the drivers past 182.47. I tried this and it worked even on my FX 3700M. Still trying to test it but I believe all of you guys with 9800M GT or 8800M GTX should be able to get all the way to 182.47. I believe it's the problem for the Alienware's motherboard. Any words from the Alienware yet?

I think it is a problem with the installer seeing the integrated chip and thinking that it should install a hybrid driver. If you install a 185 driver and then boot to the integrated chip, it will come up with some program that tries to boot both the Intel and the nvidia so you can switch with out a restart, yet if freezes the computer completely if you try to enable it.

I need to mess with it more and see if I can get it working. Cause it would be bad if we can't get any new drivers.

The multi-monitor support is not as robust as the 179.48 driver. It doesn't work very well if your laptop screen is on the left of your external monitor and you want the external monitor as primary and extend the desktop left. Otherwise the driver seems to work fine.

if you look down at the products supported tab in the driver details/download page, it says under the products not supported "hybrid-sli notebooks" and the m15x is hybrid sli. so until they support that with the new driver, we have to use the old one.
