Heya guys, I just had a quick question.
Did any of you notice on your M17X that your name or whatever did not match the Alien characters found on the preview button of the online order page.
For instance my name is 12 characters long but on my m17x there are only 7 (in the Alienn language). In addition I went back to Dell's order page and typed in my name, what came up looked nothing like what I had.
I might tell Dell I'd like a new nameplate......
On a side note what's the longest name anyone have on there, # of characters? Cause When I ordered it over the phone I got alot less number of potential character compared to getting it online....
Thanks for any help!

Can't help but smile a bit at this. It's a language they've made up, and a nameplate you will hardly ever see (which also costs nothing on top of the laptop price). Your seriously going to go through the trouble of getting it replaced?
-
Hey, here's how I figure it. This is the most amount of cash I'll ever drop on a laptop, and I just want it to be as perfect as possible. I won't send it back or anything, but if they can just ship me a stupid plate, I think it's worth the phone call.......
Plus the cool perks like the nameplate are part of what diiferentiates Alienware from other laptop companies. So I think it's valid. -
I'd be curious to know if the alien characters on everyone's name plate are identical. Keep in mind that the name plate design may have been standardized.

I ordered mine over the phone with a 14 char name plate. I'll let you know as soon as I recieve it, but you'll probably have your new name plate by then.
-
it's not a "language", just a font. you can even download it and use it in word etc.
-
I'd LOVE to have it! -
-
here you go. both the font and a translation guide i made.

Anyway, my sig reads as follows:
ALLPOWERFUL M17x
Space Black
P8600 @ 3GHz
Dual GTX 260's in SLI
320GB RAID 0
4GB DDR3 RAM
WXGA+ E2E -
Meh and here i thought it was all swear words
.
-
Should I change it, Quad??
lol -
.
-
Ok I FIANLLY translated my AW nameplate, sorry it took forever. Well it makes zero sense. Its nowheres close to what I had enscribed on there.
It reads (translated): CRE 0508
Any thoughts, I really don't care at all, just curious if it meant ANYTHING? -
That's just WEIRD, sumkallmetim...
Quad,
I didn't cuss out in my sig but it is cooler now (IMO, of course). -
Haha ya i figured you wouldnt because we spoke about it publicly and mods may have come down on you for that
Next time well have to keep certain things private lol. -
Come on guys, no other thoughts??? This is gunna drive me nuts... NVTS!!! (Mel Brooks HOTW II).
"CRE 0508" what the frick are ya doin on my lappy???? -
Lol in your above post you said you dont care at all honestly and now your saying its going to drive you NVTS , which is it ?
.
Other then that i would say call dell , explain that you to speak ALIEN and that you translated the message and its not what it should be , if nothing else this would be worth a good laugh or two. -
I mean I don't really care that it's on there, but not knowing what it means will drive me crazy (if that makes any sense lol).
-
Yes it makes sense that you have serious issues that part i do understand
You have a beautiful machine there and your complaining about the most trivial thing there is to complain about , on top of that you cant even see the thing 99.9999 percent of the time and even if you showed it to someone i dont think they would say "Hey Tim do you know those alien letters dont match what it says ?"
So just forget about it or call dell and complain . -
Have you called already? Teh frick?
-
Chill out man, I was just asking if anyone on here knew if it meant anything is all.
-
Well im just having fun with ya Tim but honestly if it had bothered me as bad as it does you i would just call dell . your the first person i have seen really mention it so i dont think anyone knows there nameplates dont translate to what they should or they just dont care .
I have seen at least one person order the name plate with something specific and not get what they wanted on it (Clauss) but thats about it. -
i'm only worried about what the english words say.
hey tim, when the world ends, will u take me with u guys? i just saw 'knowing' last week. -
Nope only the kids are allowed to go (for what ever creepy reason that would be ) .
-
I remember back when they were announcing the first m15x and m17x, they had a website that was entirely in "code" and I ran a frequency analysis on their font and figured it out pretty quickly. I think my m15x's name matched the font, but I removed the nameplate and stored it somewhere because I'm selling the laptop.
They would tease us by releasing one or two letters every day.. that made it REAL easy to figure out. -
Well I think Dell is doing a big mistake here not being cautious about this kind of details.
The target group for Alienware are Geeks with money, that want something special. The laptop is a a part of themselves somehow. They want others to identify them to the brand etc...
Imagine a Mac fan that is given the latest macbook but with a glowing Banana logo instead of the apple...
My point is that Alienware built it's brand image on these details if they do not pay attention they will ruin it and it will become nothing special.
In Europe people can't personnalize their plates another mistake IMHO (nothing difficult production wize either).
I'm a video game Brand Manager IRL. -
It's more akin to receiving a Mac with a scratch on it
Anywho, I hope they fix this nameplate issue. They're not supposed to just be random, they're supposed to be unique. That's the whole point of having a nameplate. -
(I'm not rich and not geek) -
Any way I get get my name printed in "KLINGON" on the nameplate? LoL!!!!!
-
Take it to an engraving store once you get it and provide them with the font. There's space underneath the translation to add to it.
-
LOl. I just watched that yesterday.. I was disappointed...

Try calling techsupport at Alienware instead.
-
-
This is why I think I'm going to shell out the cash for "My Tech Team"... I don't want to deal with idiots in India. Its bad enough I deal with idiots in Jamaica and the Philippines when I call Sprint...
-
Purchase via the EPP program and you will always be put through to a US Based call center during regular business hours and after hours you are diverted to a center in the Philippines. I don't miss talking to the Delhi call center...
-
I got my M17x from Microcenter. Was a much better deal than my measly 7% EPP. I miss my 14% that Comcast used to get
