I need to know how to disable the built in mic on my area 51 laptop.

I am trying to use ventrilo but nobody can hear me, because the built in mic picks up my voice and sounds horrible, you can't even make out words.

But this headset mic works fine on other computers, so I know that it is something to do with my laptops built in mic.

The headphones work fine, it's just the mic not working on the headphones on my alienware laptop.

I have windows vista too btw.

    Please help.

Just go into Setup and change the mic from Digital Mic to Microphone (or something like that).

Here I walk you through the steps.

    1. Control Panel
    2. Sound
    3. Recording Tab
    4. (Change the input to whatever your mic is)
    5. Go on vent and be happy :)

Still not working...Anything I can change in vent?

If I put the mic up to my lips and blow in it and hum you can hear me far away with a lot of blurr , and you can't figure out what I am saying, and sounds like I'm in space.

It's not the mic though, because it works fine on two other computers.

The green bar goes up and down as well in the sound tab when I changed mics...Showing that it is picking up sound, but when I get in world of warcraft voice chat or ventrilo, it's extremely blurry, and you can't make out what I am saying, and I have to put my lips to the mic and hum low to get ANY sound through it, or to make the green bar go up and down.

When I go to voice recognition, microphone setup wizard, the green bar bounces with my voice but the computer says it can't hear anything and to check the mute button on my mic. There is no mute button on my mic. I try it a couple times, it finally works and says this microphone is ready to use with the computer...But still vent and voice chat on warcraft is messed up and nothing but a blurr.

In my sound->recording tab it says

    microphone -working

    microphone-currently unavailable

    line in-currently unavailable

    cd audio-currently unavailable

Get the Realtek HD Audio Manager if you don't have it.

Okay, do the same search again except change the operating system from Windows Vista to Windows XP. When you download that sound driver you should be able to figure out what sound card / driver you have. If the XP one doesn't work then search on google for a newer version of that driver.

Okay well I d/l realtek audio effects manager, and it wasn't doing anything for me at all, because of compatibility issues, so I un-installed it and now my mic works, so I don't know what I did but vent and my mic is not working.
