I'm going to get an Alienware M17x All Powerful fairly soon, and i have alot im using it for.
Several Games, school, and my own personal programming projects.

My friend wants to get one for these reasons: to play WoW and Oblivion and because im getting one.

I told him if thats all hes using it for he doesnt really need it, he could do the same things with something cheaper.
I dont wana discourage him but i dont want him paying 2,300 for half of it hes not gonna use.
am i being truthful or am i just blowing steam?

could he get something else for cheaper that will still work for what he needs? and do u have any suggestions?

yeah let him get whatever he wants, lol. There's no reason to tell him don't get it if he likes it.

if you don't want him copying you, tell him you found a system that is just sweet, and blah and blah, and tell him all about it... of course, you'll have to find a cheaper, but capable system...

sell him on the idea, then let him buy it, and go buy your AW.

deceptive? maybe, but he'll have something different :) and it'll do exactly what he needs it to do.

also, I dunno what you're planning to get in your system, but all I can say is with rendering/compiling, I can't recommend too hard the need for more L2 cache. keep an eye on it... I don't think you'll ever be sad about spending a bit more for a system with 6MB L2 rather than 3MB... or maybe more? all the quads have 3M per core.

    obviously not much but still

1500 is all im asking ....considering its a OEM t9400 and a whitebook chassis

has matte finish and can only get the AW chassis by paying for AW, 1500 suddenly isn't bad.

I'd have him look into an m17 (like moos!) and have him consider going second hand on older models like the m17 and m15x. I just picked up two nice machines second hand from another brand and saved 1200 bucks by doing so. Anyway moo you should try craigslist save you shipping and I bet you'd get a nice amount I have people lining up wanting my m15x here for 1000 and am thus thinking of asking more for it :) (still not sure I wanna take such a big hit on it though-likely just gonna keep it)

i dont have to really worry about it anymore. his parents wont let him get one.

    1. they dont want him wasting his money
    2. they dont think he needs a computer (he has like 10other game systems, a triccked out MP3 and a tricked out phone)
    3. and....they dont trust him having internet access without supervision
