    Hi all -

Received my new monitor yesterday (Alienware AW2310) and I'm having a difficult time getting it to register 120hz. When adding the newest Cat 10.3 drivers CCC doesn't pick up on the fact that it's a 120hz monitor. When I install the default Asus drivers which is the Cat 9.12 drivers it does but it never gives me an option to change the hz above 60. I've only got it to work once at a lower resolution using a monitor driver from Viewsonic. The default MS driver for the monitor does nothing also. Anyone with experience working with ATI cards and 120hz monitors? TIA!

I would say talk to BIGX333. He was very vocal about only preferring 120 Hz displays so maybe he has some experience in this

You should probably drop Dell support a line and bug them about it as well as Asus and maybe ATI.

from my experience, when i hook up my M17x to my 120hz TV, the laptop shows it as 60hz, but when i play movies it runs in 120hz. don't know if it's the same for your monitor but all i did was change the settings on the tv and made sure it was running at 120hz. Only movies can be 120hz refresh, everything else is 60hz for me. I have the samsung 52" LCD.

120 Hz tv's are different from monitors. they take a 60 Hz signal and convert it to 120 Hz. But they still receive 60 Hz from the source (laptop in this case)

A monitor receives a 120 Hz signal from its source and shows it straight up, no conversion. The 120 Hz of the TV's out right now is purely marketing BS, not a true 120 Hz but an "approximation" based off algorithms

This issue might be the fact that the mobile ATI cards are too under powered for 120hz. Seems like desktop ATI owners have similar issues and actually OC their cards to achieve 120hz. That would suck.

So, have you tried changing the refresh rate in Windows?

It seems like you were trying just through CCC.

    Worth a shot....

Yes, there are less options through Windows. Someone else gave me a suggestion to use ATI Tray tools which can over ride the frequency but I BSOD every time I load the app.

and did you get the 3d vision kit too?
i'm just dying to know how 3d vision runs with laptops.

I'm not familiar with the R2 (unfortunately :( ) or the AW2310 but I had a similar case with my R1 and my GF's GD245HD. Are you using the hdmi port? And how are you checking for the refresh rate? Unfortunately 120hz won't work with hdmi unless the R2 is using HDMI 1.4 As far as I know it should be able to report 120hz in CCC but the screen won't show a 120hz refresh rate. The only way I managed to use 120hz on my laptop is by using a display port to DVI dual link cable.

I'm using an HDMI to DVI converter and this is with a Asus G73. The monitor itself will tell you the settings it is running at through it's menu.

I might be mistaken but I don't think you will be able to see 120hz reported by the monitor when using a HDMI to DVI converter. Well even if the monitor won't report 120hz I think the CCC should let you enable 120hz. When trying to use the HDMI port to DVI converter (not DVI-D, I'm not even sure they exist) the monitor won't report 120hz on my Nvidia cards but i can enable it in the control panel.

Anyway as soon as I can use my GF's PC (which should be in a few hours) I'll let you know if I can enable 120hz with an adapter or not, since it's using a desktop 4870 the results should be closer to your situation than with my R1.

    Thanks.

I was able to get it to work once using a monitor driver from Viewsonic at a lower res. The fact that CCC sees it as a 120hz monitor makes me think it should work but who knows. I have my M17x coming soon also and I can test it with that.

Well I was able to test earlier than expected. The computer is using 10.3 and is not able to go higher than 75hz with the adapter, the windows resolution settings won't go higher than 60hz though. When enabling 75hz in CCC it automatically switched to 1280x1024.

I think that even if you manage to enable 120hz in the drivers you will not be able to have actual 120hz on the monitor, apparently hdmi 1.3 limits the refresh rate to something around 120hz.
I'm not sure about VGA, it might be worth a try.

So how can they advertise and sell a 120Hz 3D monitor if you can't get it to run at 120Hz and, therfore, no 3D?

Well it can run at 120hz but only with the DVI-D input, I agree they should advertise more about this or even better, provide a display port input on these panels since dell usually pushes display port, not including one on their 3D panel is really strange.

Actually HDMI 1.3 limits you to 60 Hz I think.

DisplayPort on the M17x will hopefully allow it (we shall know soon)

    You're right, I meant 60hz

I will try today on 9.12 as soon as I get the chance (dragon age made my gf's pc quite busy :( )

    EDIT:

Yeah it does. At least on the R1 but I think you need something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814999025&cm_re=saphire-_-14-999-025-_-Product

I actually went straight to this adapter instead of a cheaper one because it seemed passive adapters won't work. Didn't want to waste time looking for non working adapters everywhere.
What I mean is cheaper (passive) adapters might work but I didn't test them myself.

I already have a Display Port to DVI cable. Unfortunately the Asus G73 is "port challenged" and it doesn't have that output. I'll have to wait for my M17x to test.

I'm afraid I won't be able to help you with this anymore, sorry about that.

    But i CAN'T :( ! ?

Thanks dell, thanks alot, gonna send my AW2310 back..

Hmm just found this link http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/7947-force-dvi-hdmi-resolutions-refresh-rates-13.html ?

    btw. When I run the 1920 x 1080 it's not full screen ?

    Why is that..

And I'm getting a pain in my head when i'm use it..

    Got damn Alienware, seriously ??

    Hmm just a thought:

VGA to DVI converter 1 "native"

    HDMI to DVI converter 2

So if we use a dual link DVI cabel, and plug 1 and 2 in ??

The (==] kind of converter instead of the normal [==] hdmi

But when i run to 1920 x 1080 the screen is not full :(

Dos'nt matter if i only run at the AW screen, or dublicate them, it the same resualt :(

To get that menu go to desktops and displays then select configure from the dropdown (the little arrow in the corner of the monitor of interest) and you will be there
