    Hello All,

I'm packing up my M17X r2 for return back to dell and wanted some advice on wiping the HD? I've had it for about two weeks and have my steam account and a bunch of games on it.

    Any advice is appreciated

    Thanks

Cool; thanks for the link. I'm hoping to drag this whole process out long enough for the 5870's to come out!

You want to wipe the HD clean? Why not stick in the windows disk and reformat the drive completely?

If you really want to scrub the drive go here:

    http://www.dban.org/

Nice little ISO you can burn and it has all kinds of wipe methods depending on how secure you want it and how much time you have to let it run. It even has methods so secure that only an electron microscope can possible piece the data back together, lol

That's why when using the W7/Vista DVD do the delete-format-create-format cycle a few times. Most algorithms that allow recovering data will get lost after 2-3 cycles. Even for the most advanced tools it takes a lot of time to recover those important documents ;) Our company provides the recovery service (from formatted disks).
Of course, you could always just take the HDD out and smash it with a hammer, to be 100% certain. :p

Why don't you just use a high powered magnet?

http://www.killdisk.com/ Low level format that sucker. I do this after doing the free wipe (writes 00's in every sector). I have never been able to recover anything from a drive that has had that done. And its free.
