I was just typing up some law notes running nothing but MS word and winamp when vista suddenly froze and the sound started looping. The cursor responded but nothing else did. I did a hard boot but now the vista login screen just goes endlessly, alienrespawn loads up nothing but a black screen with a cursor and safemode won't load past crcdisk.sys. I'm kinda getting desperate here since I have a lot of work not backed up etc :( Anyone know how to fix this problem/get windows going so I can at least back something up? Getting worried here, please help!

I had a problem similar as this with my old Dell Inspiron. It was a hard drive failure and the only way I was able to boot back into windows was after a fresh install of xp.

try booting off a live CD (linux) to check your hard drive

if it is not broken then you can copy over your files hat way then reinstall vista

if you have a second hard drive you can install Vista to that and maybe retrieve your work from the failing HDD. At least you will be back up and running and have a chance at recovering your work.

Thanks~ I managed to get into windows and back up what was important. I ended up getting resource dvd to start up and used the 'fix startup probs' option. Tho it took forever to even start that up and wasn't recognizing that I had OS installed.
I just ran a diagnostics test and get error code 2000-0146 and a Fail on the Hard drive DST short test...Guess this means its time for replacement HD?
