Looks huge lol. No AlienFX? Suckage. :p

    Specs are nice though.

And it looks like AW think making powerful 15 inchers are too risky for them :p

Wow way to steal the whitebook...

By the way this makes me think how outdated my laptop has become because of AW's repair time. Now my laptop will be worth less on ebay :(.

Any bets on when Alienware will be bringing this to the UK? As in, some time before April 2009?

Ugh you guys have no idea how pissed I am right now. My M9750 hasn't been working for almost 4 months (now they are trying to get a slave 8700GT and it is taking forever). and during that time two new 17" notebooks as well as new GPU's have managed to surface :(

Expect a LONG LONG writeup of my experience when it is finished.

Maybe you should ask politely, for a upgrade to the m17. Since your m9750 hasn't been working for 4 months.

yes nickbarbar it does 3870 in crossfire can score 15k easily on 3dmark 06 but in game performance can be the same or a little less then 8800gtx/9800gt but it could improve greatly as new drivers come out.

Why would anyone buy the M17x now?

Also, how silly is it that they even released the M17x which was always just an M1730 rebranded

The base model in my country is €1300. A little cheaper even in European countries with less VAT.

That is a GREAT price for a 17" laptop with HD3870 mobility in Europe.

The base screen res is a little low (1440x900) but on the flip side, its a perfect match for a single HD3870.

I like it, its probably the best value gaming laptop in Europe at the moment.

are there any benchmarks for games with a 3870x2? i hear its slightly worse then 8800gtx sli. but the 3dmark 06 for the 3870x2 is 3k more then the 8800 and is almost on par 9800 gtx sli. r the drivers just imature? because these cards seem amazing for the value

Hmm, I was almost certain that Alienware was going to rebrand the W840. After all, it is the successor to their popular m9750. What really amazes me is that price. When you compare it to XoticPC, the base price is lower (because the base specs are also lower), but when you bring it up to par with the XoticPC version, the price is within $20 of each other, plus Alienware has it's discounts. Very impressive. I did not expect this from Alienware.

They are actually almost equal in price when you spec the up the same. This isn't as epic as the launch of the M9750 because AW does not own exlusitivity to the "Blackbook". It's funny that they basically have two of the same 17" notebook out now. Wonder who the hell will buy the M17x now 0_0.

Yea I dont care about Alien FX or Smartbay. However the Dual Crossfire isn't proven to be faster than Dual 8800GTX's but we will see (I'm talking game benchmarks). I would go for the M17 if I had a choice because of the Quad processors and 64 bit both of which are beneficial for design work.

I dont know which to buy now, i want the one that is best for gaming, like crysis and farcry 2, but i dont know if dual 3870 mobilities beat sli 9800m GT's. Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

In games like Far Cry 2 and Crysis, the 9800M GTs will have the upper hand due to more mature drivers and generally better performance on high end Nvidia cards. Because the Mobility 3870 x2 just came out recently, driver support is relatively weak, as is showing in some gaming benchmarks done on the OCZ whitebooks. However, other games such as COD 4 show competitive results amongst the two GPU solutions.

Might have gone for the M17 if it was an option at the time. But pretty happy with my M17X. For the price and options the M17 seems like a better bargain.

I'm really NOT impressed by the M17 except for its price. You can get twice the performance at the same price as a m15x.

Its such a hard decision, i mean the 3870's maybe new, but the price difference plus the fact that the processor and RAM is superior in the m17 for a lower price, the only thing that is stopping me from making a decision now is the graphics cards.

3870x2 is better than 9800M GTs in SLI and a little less powerfull than 9800M GTXs in SLI.

    M17 = worse looking than m17X ( only backlit keyboard 3 colours)
M17 = much less expensive and montevina, quad core, ATI and ddr3 Ram

    Hmm ?

Alienware is definitely throwing a curve ball at us by dropping prices on their m15x and introducing a system that is on par in terms of price with their competitors over at Sager :)

should be cheap, ati 3870 isn't even top of the line in terms of SLI anymore, 9800GTX and maybe the unreleased 4000 series will definitely top this. THis might just be a "until those are more readily available" config.

I think the look of the M17 is cool. I would pick the M17 on price and the chassis alone.
