They look pretty good. I wonder how well they perform.
-
The new 13 will be revealed at a later date, but all that has been reported is that its getting the new design, have an actual touchpad + buttons will have the OLED panel as an option, and will carry a GTX 1060 ( source).
I think it may come with Kaby Lake-U. -
By the looks of it, there is no way SLI will be offered.
They are going thin and light as predicted. At best GTX 1080 it seems, so you are good for 1080p & 2k gaming... In 3+ years they may catch up to 4k gaming LoL. Typical Dellienware. Basically buy a Pascal Titan X, AGA & make sure you get the best CPU they offer if you plan on doing any 4k gaming with the laptop. Definitely sow this coming.

Well finally, they scrapped off the Carbonfiber ext to magnesium alloy again, with the change of Alienware font too, Hope they have MXM GPUs in there.
Also they push forward the thin & light design but hey they got the G-Sync this time with 1440P 120Hz.
From the Aleinware 15 they seem to have another typo there lmao..

Are the keys individually backlit? I hated the old 4 zone keyboard because the colors would spill over into the next zone.
Overall I like what I see but expect these to be expensive. Wonder if the 15 will get the 1060 as a base seeing as the older version started below a 970 which the 1060 replaces. -
Pretty sure they'll never go back to sli systems again. Besides the fact that they want make them as slim as they can, sli cards used up all 16 pcie lanes that were available to the cpu. The last system to have sli was the 18, which came out before pcie ssd's came into the mainstream. Other companies use switches or controllers or something along those lines to share the lanes between the two cards and pcie ssd's, but something had to get gimped at one point or another. Mostly intels fault, even with a 6700k, can't run two desktop 1080s in sli with full x16 speed on both cards due to lack of pcie lanes.

These are not light by any means.. The 15" is over 7 lbs and the 17" over 9.. The 13 inch will be 6 lbs.

I am guessing they will be bringing these systems with Kabylake on them. Wonder if the Alienware 15 has a 1080 or tops out at the 1070.

AW15R3 = Up to 100W graphics cards. Or I am wrong? What max TDP will the 1080 graphics be for AW17R4?
Still No G-Sync panel on AW15, only 2 ram slots, now with only 68-Wh battery (99 Wh is optional) + everything is BGA ....
Will the new AW17R4 get 4 RAM slot? Now with only 68-Wh battery (99 Wh is optional) as AW15R3 + everything is BGA....
Larger battery now as an option. Dell knows how to make money. Or put it the other way... A downgraded battery size from it's predecessor if you dont upgrade the battery size!!
25% thinner than its predecessor... I hope the cooling will be good enough for heavy OC.
And no new AW18 as expected!!Ashtrix likes this. -

Looks like dell is probably going the xps 15 route on its Alienware line now and giving you the option of either a smaller battery and a 2.5 inch drive slot or a bigger battery and m2 ssd only

Hmmm....mixed feelings...
It definitely is a big improvement over the previous with the new cooling design.
All the different panel options are nice.
The thing is...if this thing can cool the 1080, then it'll make a huge statement.
Also the new design is a lot more mature...now with the 6820HK/1080, it is no slouch and shall prove to be a good performer.
Will it give a DTR a run for its money with cooling and overall performance? I'm not talking about benching...Last edited by a moderator: Sep 2, 2016hmscott likes this. -

I must say I like the design and offering 1440p 120hz is brilliant.
I don't expect performance to be pushing the envelope though.
Of course no flagship or PGA CPU / MXM as expected. Good for those who think 'upgrading' and 'laptops' are dirty words. -
Only a wimpy 68-Wh battery for the new AW 15/17 models. And you need to pay more for the battery upgrade
68-Wh battery for an 17 inches laptop is a bummer!
-
But any laptop on the market (Clevo desktop CPU excl.) bought right could not be upgraded to Kaby in 4 months. Intel to blame.
The weight of the units is somewhat on the behemot side, considering all this "thinner" ads.
If 13" spots 1060 and dual core cpu again that'll be a real bummer. No 18.4", sadly. I guess it weight around 6kg + dual psu options.
Finally, G-Sync and new panels. No mention of Freesync for amd gpu's, though.
Overall, the design looks sleeker and should look great on the desk. Waiting for the reviews)

They may be using a different version of the gtx 1080, gddr5 instead of gddr5x.

I'm surprised they will offer a GTX 1080 version. Well, performance wise it seems a very good upgrade but I don't like the aesthetics of it...
The bulge on the back reminds me of my previous notebook, the XPS 15 L502x, but it looks off on the AW. Also, I very much don't like heat exhausts on the sides of the notebooks... On the XPS it was somewhat bearable since it was only on the left side. Hopefully it works as better heat dissipation.
The camera is an obvious gimmick, although Windows Hello support is welcome.
Finally a G-Sync option and seems like the several display options will cater to everyone. Hopefully no substandard FHD panels this time.
Dell brought back the Display Port which is a plus, but they left only 2 Type-A USB 3.0 ports. Now there's a Type-C USB 3.0 Port in addition to the Thunderbolt USB 3.1... Not really sensible right now, in my opinion.
Anyway, most of my criticisms are nitpicks and kind of trying to justify staying with my AW 17 R3.
(Not that the new models will be coming anytime soon to my country.)

The side vents are intakes not exhausts. The air comes in the bottom and the sides and goes out the back.
I know the feeling of trying to justify.DarkKnight919 and iunlock like this. -
Mh...i don't know...i dislike the design, it seems copied from Aorus/Asus. Also i preferer lighter laptop.
I think VR is going to be another Graphics Amplifier. Is just a commercial strategy.
The Tobii is an useless thing, also compromise the system reliability.Last edited: Sep 2, 2016Ashtrix likes this. -
Now they are uglier, despite the boost performance of the upgrade.

I don't really like those led strips on the display or on the sides, but i am interested in seeing their performance.

Not sure on the new design. Coming from a m15x I really liked the curved design of the 17r3. I know it's a older design now but would have preferred that I think.
Still 1440p 120hz will be stunning.
Are they MXM cards? -
Techradar posted a pic of the new laptop disassembled
Looks like a pain for repasting again...Wes of StarArmy and DarkKnight919 like this. -
What?
No changes from Dell. I think Msi, Clevo, Asus and Acer's best 17 inches laptop models have 4 ram slots. Maybe Dell this time also will rely on that there will come higher capacity ram sticks as before?
Yeah. Throw out your ALL 2 older ram sticks if you need more ram!!

-
seems like we need to get the laptop fully disassembled and flip over the motherboard like the last alienware...
they removed XMP functionality in the newest or 2nd newest bios for the alienware 15/17Last edited by a moderator: Sep 2, 2016Papusan likes this. -

Ehhh, what about the Alienware 13?, went to alienware.com and they still sell the old gen model but I wasn't able to select an OLED screen option, is that panel going to the new model or was it just a unicorn laptop?

I have to admit that the new alienware looks pretty nice. I just hope it does not throttle like the previous gen. Any idea if they are gonna stick a desktop cpu in the 17?

Things I like about the new 17 compared to my 17 R3
- You can finally switch off Optimus
- Better screen choices
- Design, really digging it. Except for the LED strips on the side of the LCD
- The cooling seems improved on paper, now with the addition of side intakes instead of just bottom on the R3
However weight had increased although the laptop is 25% slimmer as claimed by Dell.
17 R3 - 3.78KG
NEW 17 - 4.42KG
just hope this means better built qualityhmscott likes this. -
why is it 8 lbs for a 15 inch though ? .... really man

I like how they look but it sure does look different compared to the more minimalistic 2015 series which I also really like.
They did step up their game though. I know some will probably complain again because no desktop processor yada yada. These CPU's are more than fine for gaming and some heavy duty work while retaining some portability. I am curious about the pricing.
The new Alienware font is nice though, Yeah I am a designer and those type of things matter to me. Letter spacings and such.

And will Dellienware put in cooling for PCH chips this time? http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/pch-heatsink-mod-alienware-15.794484/page-4#post-10311494
http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...rottling-problems.792344/page-4#post-10323320
The cost for PCH cooling is maybe around 40-50 Cents!! And if Dell will use the maxed 180/190w 1080 graphics... Will Dell still use 240W psu?
