I had the 15r2 with 980m prior to Pascal release, but I got a Clevo/Sager when the 1070s came out, simply because I HATE the new AW chassis. (specifically the horrible fan apparatus on the back). Any speculation regarding whether they will release a new chassis for the Max-Q models? I would love to see a return to the chassis they used for Maxwell, perhaps a little thinner.

This is just a guess, but because they confirmed a 15 will have a 1080 Max-Q I don't think the chassis's are gonna change yet.

Judging by all the preview Max Q models I don't see how they couldn't do a redesign on the chassis for the Max Q designs as the current designs are huge compared to any Max Q notebook. The whole point of Max Q is to bring high end graphics to an Ultra Book and keep it quiet and cool. It has been largely rumored that the Max Q 1080's are going to run lower then a current gen 1070 so it would be a little pointless.

Agreed. As it stands they have to redesign the cooling system, as they have a shared heat-sink, and the stock CPU puts out more heat than the GPU. No way they can get the 40db target with any CPU load no matter what they do to make the 1080 Max-Quid

I remember seeing something a while back where they said that they were going to keep the chasis the same and offer a max-q 1080 in the current body 15r3 and that it would operate at a higher TDP than the rest of the max-q on the market because the cooling will be able to handle it. Alienware has always had the reputation to have higher performance at the expense of a thin body so I don't think they are going to change the body just for this. I think we have another year or 2 with the current design and personally I think its beautiful and it doesn't bother me at all.

It wouldn't make any sense at all...why bother even diving into max Q if your not going to change the chassis. The whole point is to get to ultra book levels and the 15R3 isn't even close.

1080 Max-Qrippled ain't much different in TDP than the normal 1070.

Honestly, I would buy the new AW 15r3 with a gimped 1070 maxQ to in a heartbeat if they just changed the chassis. I don't even need a massive redesign, just standard vents on the back of the machine instead of that hideous fan block disaster. Ugh, so ugly!

Personally I'm a fan of having something extend from the back of laptops since it makes the laptop easier to carry/hold on to and would be disappointed if they removed the fan 'hump' in future redesigns.

That's one reason I upgraded from the 13 R1 to a 13 R3 aside from the performance - I like the new look (although I do wish they would bring back swapable batteries that don't require you to open the case).

An Alienware 13 with a GTX1080 Max-Q would be rather interesting to see.

It's not going to happen, at best we might get a Max-Q 1070 and I doubt that there would be enough of a boost in performance over the 1060 to make it a worthwhile upgrade.

It looks like Max-Q is only going to be for 15" form factor models laptops when it is released. And it kinda seems like all laptop will have the same lay out... but different chassis for branding. Kinda like Clevo but nvidia layout with intel. This is how I am understanding it at least and from all news released so far.
