    Hi,

so I am replacing the processor with the qx9300 and there is a chip next to the processor which has a thick black pad (rubber material) as a compound between the chip and a second heatsink near the cpu. Do i just reuse the thick black pad or do I remove it and replace it with the as5.....In the process right now so quick help appreciated....thx

It shouldn't make a difference but I would put AS5.

That's just the thermal pad. It'll still work. Some prefer them over the grease.

yea, in some parts they are nessary.

Most companeys use them because they are fool proof

If there is a pad there then you should re use it if all possible as generally there is a larger gap there that Grease may not be able to fill properly .

    Hello All,

A few questions about the qx9300 processor.....

    1. what should the cpu temps be.....at rest under load.
    2. what is a good benchmark software to test out my new qx9300.....I want to make sure its working 100%.
    3. Any other info about test or running the qx greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

I have a few picks from the install I will upload later. It really was pretty simple. If you follow the service manual to the "t" you won't have a problem at all. Just be carefull and take your time. Be sure to put the screws in different jars or something to label and put them back in the right places.

Is there one particular one with cpu temp monitoring? Or do I just run HWmonitor in the background?

I dont have the m17x yet, but i assume that realtemp would be the best way to monitor just cpu temp...hwmonitor will do that, as well as gpu and hd, etc. I guess that it is personal preference...

hwmonitor would be the best for monitoring :)

let it run in the backround

Riva tuner is good also for monitoring in game temps

This is a tutorial for using RivaTuner to display pertinent on screen statistics while gaming. Most useful for most of us will be FPS and temperature, but core MHz may be of use for some who suffer from downclocking and/or stuttering issues.

First, download RivaTuner from Guru3D's website. Install as normal. It may ask you on initial start if you want to activate the monitoring plugins, say yes.

After installation and opening, you should see a screen like this. Click the little triangle by Customize.

Next you will want to set up the plugins to display the fields you want. The initial Hardware Monitoring screen will likely display some different fields, since this is mine after I've configured it to show what I want.

You will want to click the large Setup button on the bottom right. The next screenshot shows what the screen will look like, I've scrolled down to Core Temperature as an example.

Highlight Core Temperature and click "Setup", this takes you to the individual setup for this monitoring field. Any time later on you can access this directly from the monitoring graphs by right clicking a graph and selecting Setup.

Under "On-screen display settings", select "Show core temperature in on screen display." I personally check "Show temperature in tray icon" also since I like to know what I'm idling at during general usage. You will also configure the FPS field the same way, but I don't show this in a tray icon. If you want to know what MHz your card is running at during a game, do the same for Core clock, or memory clock, or both. When done hit OK to get back to the hardware monitoring graphs.

After this is configured, you should a little orange RivaTuner icon next to the items you configured.

Click on the icon. If all goes well after starting the server, you should see the orange icon disappear from the hardware graph, and show up in your system tray. Right click on the system tray icon and select "Show". It will bring up a screen that looks like this: (It may have opened directly right away for some of you)

Things I changed were were to turn 'Show On-Screen Display' to "ON" (If not already), set Application detection level to 'High', played around with the zoom (This changes the size of the on screen display in-game), and changed the default color of the display to the bright green dot you see in the bottom right. Using the plus sign on the bottom left I also added all my game executables just in case it didn't detect them. This should be considered optional and done as needed. When finished, hit the down arrow to minimize to tray.

Final step is to test it out in game. Here is a sample of what it looks like on my system playing Mirror's Edge:

If you have any questions, suggestions, etc, feel free to post. Hopefully this will be as useful to you all as it is to me.

thanks for the advise...I am currently getting cpu temps as follows with overclock to 2.93mhz

    38º to 41º at idle
68º to 72º at full load (burn in test loading all cores for 25 minutes)

    are these good/ok temps?

not they are just right and are actually cool for a QUAD core runnign @ 3.0 ghz :p

the processor is rated for 100c so it won't die until then ;) otherwise keep overclocking :p

    I LOL'd.

    Those temps are pretty nice.

I'd personally overclock my Q9000 beyond 2.45GHz but OCCT thinks that the cores run too hot when they hit mid 80s, so it stops automatically, so I've got no good way to test stability and temps at above that.

I'm actually a bit worried about my core temps...they're all low 50s right now idling and this is unoverclocked in power saver, i.e. with the processor multiplier decreased automatically making it 1.6GHz...

mine runs idle in the high 40's low 50's also @ 3.06. Under 100% load it will reach mid 80's, one reason i'm thinking about replacing the thermal paste with ocz freeze is because i'm not comfortable with those temp readings.

well you can say you've seen higher, as my cores has reached up to 87c in prime. even w/stock settings it doesn't make much difference. Maybe i'm just blocking the air intakes somehow? as i' have noticed if i lift the laptop up while at those temps under 100% load, the cpu immediately starts to drop in temps.

Yea , since the cpu vent is on the bottom, raiseing it allows more air to be sucked in. Most people run it with the backs raised up for that reason :)

wow, that sure helped. my idle temps dropped by an average of 15 to 18c to

    core 0-33c, core 1-31c, core 2-37c, core 3-33c

dropped my 100% load temps by a little bit more, cpu oc'd to 3.06 which actually would fail a 10min occt test with a cpu to hot error, now passes easily, comp fans never turned on

    100% load max temps were

    core 0-68c, core 1-72c, core 2-72c, core 3-69c

I don't exactly have the laptop sitting on it properly as i have to rearranged some stuff on my disk to do, so i expect once done it may be a bit better than that. When i decided to redo the thermal paste with ocz freeze it will probably drop a bit more

Edit: i think in a bit it is time to try and push this thing some more :)

well, I originally used the included paste and today I receieved my arctic silver 5 and arctic clean. I just pulled it apart again and re-did the cpu. New numbers:
    at idle: 30,29,32,30
    at FULL Load: 67,68,70,69

SOOO much better....Free advise, don't use the included paste from shirleyfu's....arctic silver 5 is much better!! And these numbers are without any external cooling and overclock to 2.93ghz.
