GTA IV is a horrible port and there are many problems and bugs in the PC version.
Try the newest driver from nVidia is about all I can suggest with it.

it is enough to play GTA 4

    go away Cashflow....

GTA 4 is a Poor Port from a console which means it need ALOT of CPU power. The x9000 should be good. Try updateing to the most recent patchs and upgrade your graphics drivers.

if that has already been done tell me what Res you are running @

EDIT: most games use all your video memory .....also it seems you have alot of the settings turned up to utilize all the memory you may have to turn some of the settings down in order to Play GTA 4.

You did buy a Super nice machine but you also bought a 15 inch with only 1 GPU if you wanted to play high detail games you should of got a 17 inch with SLI other wise you will have to turn settings down on your m15x

have you updated your graphic driver? What is your current OS? is it up to date? What about updating your directx?

I have a GTX280m + p8400 and I can run it @ 1680*1050 with very high settings and sliders to middle with a slight lag. I honestly think it may be caused by a downclock or driver issue.

Sometimes you think the graphics driver might not be the problem, when it is.
My current desktop was crashing constantly on GTA IV with the latest drivers, but reverting back to older drivers stablelized it, while my m17x needed the latest drivers to run it at decent fps.

What resolution are you trying to play at also is a factor, what is the resolution set to?

Performs BEST is the Keyword it still runs great i played on high details with a t9400 !

Ken you need to upgrade your drivers from laptopvideo2go.com
your using AW drivers which work but they are not as good as the Newest ones out.

Your CPU will be maxed out on this game it takes ALOT of CPU to run. What resolution are you running the benchmark @?

Did you make sure that your m15x is running on the 9800M and not your integrated graphics yet? Right-click on the desktop and see if you see the control panel option.

haha, you guys have funny and useful comments.
But here is my two cents: update your GTA 4 and graphics driver (186.03 is good) then make sure you are booting in external video card mode. After that do another check on other drivers that might slow down the system. Don't forget that to check out this awesome gta 4 forum too!

I also have recently purchased GTA 4 and haven't had any of the problems you mentioned.

You have to have Rockstar Social Club and Games for Windows Live running in order to access multiplayer. Have you tried starting these programs with the game?

And as others have mentioned, try updating GTA4 to the recent patches, here is a link to where you can download patches for GTA4

It is not a good idea to play in stealth mode, Pencilcheck. It is funny that the game crashes every 20-30 minutes too. MAybe there is something wrong with your copy of the game.

Yes, playing in Stealth Mode WILL lead to much lower frame rates. Seeming as your game is crashing, it definitely seems like a software error unless your whole system is crashing along with it.

but that's just because GTA IV needs a really good computer to run it. i run it at native resolution, all settings around 20 (no shadows) and get 25-30fps.

for starters, make sure your AC cable is plugged in, you're not on stealth mode, and your vista power setting is set to "high performance" (click on the battery icon in the taskbar to change this). my settings were (i uninstalled GTA IV this morning) about 22 (out of 100) for each setting, except shadows at 0. resolution was 1440x900, with no AA or AF.

yeah, just set everything to maximum performance in Alienfusion (which i believe is just a GUI for stuff you could change just as well in the OS' own power settings).
