Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has tried the latest official notebook drivers with CUDA released by nvidia recently. Do they offer good performance and cooling ?
If not then could someone recommend the best driver for the 8800m GTX and the m15x is right now ? Im using the "official Alenware" driver that was out quite some time ago (179 series or something like that i think)

Im also planning on upgrading to 4 GB ram soon and I can find 800mhz corsair ram for a buck more than 667 mhz (both CL 5). I heard someone mention that eeven though the 800 will downclock to 667, it might be better to get the 800 because the CL would lower and it might just be a tenny bit faster. Is this true ? and can using 800 dclocked to 667 reduce its or the m15x's lifetime or cause any problems ?

There is more latency in the 800 sticks, compare them at newegg. I don't know if there is a noticeable impact though.

These are the two sets of ram that Im interested in :

    800 mhz : http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-(2x2GB)-Corsair-Value-Select-DDR2-SO-DIMM-PC2-6400-(800MHz)-200-Pin-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-CAS-5

    667 mhz : http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/4GB-(2x2GB)-Corsair-Value-Select-DDR2-SO-DIMM-PC2-5300-(667MHz)-200-Pin-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-CL5

As you can see both are CL 5 and the 800 mhz is just a couple of bucks more so which one should I get ?

As for the gfx driver, which one would give me the best performance while keeping temperatures lower ?

you won't able to utilise the 800mhz speed kit, so save the 20$. as for the drivers, lot of personal preference here. some want the best performance, others smoother gameplay. dox' 185.20 or 180.48, or 179.28 from Nvidia.

The extra ram is only £2 more not $20. Iknow it will dclock to 667 mhz, my question was wether the Cas Latency will also reduce ?

Also, what does unbuffered memory mean ?

And has anyone tried the new CUDA notebook drivers from nvidia ?

the latency of the 800mhz set will be lower - not that you'd actually notice that.

I'm using the new official driver from Nvidia and thus far it's been very stable. Gameplay is smoother. 3dmark scores are about the same as previous drivers. It downclocks when the GPU is used intensively.

In my experience, if you can afford to buy it (and it isn't too OVER priced) then one should try and buy the better product. I understand that it will down clock, that's fine. It will also lower the latency, but like whizzo said, you prolly won't notice. However, what about another laptop in the future? Will you be able to use this RAM in there? possibly. In a year you may wish you had bought the bigger RAM.

    just my .02c

Not really it seems likely that the next laptop I buy would require ddr3 ram anyway with the way things are going and in a couple of years, 4+ gb of ram would probably become the norm fo for now Ive ordered the 2 x 2gb corsair 667 mhz cas 5 ram.

Iwas just taking a look at 2 vs 4gb comparisons on the net and it seems that 4gb does not boost fps by that much but it does make the minimum framerate for games higher by a decent amount so you do get smoother gameplay. It also seems to reduce loading times and also the downtime after just exiting a game. So Im quite glad I decided to upgrade.
