Was just on alienware site looking at the alpha. If you scroll down to the accessories, it shows the new tactx headset. But when you click on it you just get the old version.... so we are getting close to seeing some new mice, headphones and keyboards.
I really hope they bring back the optx line. Love my 3 21.5 inch optx lcds.

Nice! I hope we finally start seeing wireless TactX products. I am so not into having cord connections, especially where laptops are concerned.

Wireless would be great, Since I know alienware likes to run logitech stuff.... Im hoping for a g502 and the 701+
They also released a new version of the area 51.... looks like a triangle version of the new laptops.Mr. Fox likes this. -

It would need to use 2.4ghz wireless to have no audio lag though. I use the recon 3d headset with that so no lag

I had a hard time finding it. I think this might be the image. Looks nice.
I had to drill down as though I was going to place a pre-order to find it. Alienware Alpha Steam Machine Console | Dell
I hope this headset, the TactX keyboard and TactX mouse are all wireless Bluetooth... at least wireless, but I would prefer them to be Bluetooth because it is more convenient and it would be nice not have to waste USB port(s) on a wireless receiver. -
-
That would be nice... it basically looks identical, and the brand is one Alienware has partnered with more than once. If it has a big bulky base like that I would never consider buying it. That more or less defeats the purpose of having wireless mobility. I hope that part is not the same. Would be fine for a desktop and probably a nice quality product, but that huge base unit would be a really poor option for those that are gaming on the go.
-
My thought is that with the alpha, wireless stuff is only going to make sense...
-
Oh, I agree... wireless is the only thing that makes good sense with an Alpha or a laptop. I generally won't purchase wired peripherals like mice, keyboards and headphones/headsets any more. But, having a big base station like that would suck. It's no longer truly wireless, only partially wireless. It would be inconvenient, if not worthless for travel. And it is an eyesore for stationary use if it's not hidden from view. It's like buying a wireless mouse only to have a big honking USB-connected transmitter/charging dock sitting on the desk... just another ball and chain to deal with. Might as well stick with the hard-wired option and not spend any money.
-
Whoa... did you read my full post before I removed the base station idea?
Well, if so since no one else can read it...
My idea was to make a wireless base station that would link the alpha with a box that has a bunch of USB ports and headphone/mic jacks on it to plug in your mouse/headset/keyboard to.
While not my best idea, I think it might kinda work...
I really think alienware needs to make a alienfx tv kit. A small box with plugs in it for a bunch of RGB leds that you can control with alienfx. Thus turning any lcd, desk, tv, table, anything into a extension of your alienfx theme.
Thats my ace idea, but it never took off on ideastorm. -
No, I did not see it. Not sure what it said.
Why did you remove it? -
Talking about wireless, my year and a half old Alienware 18 and Samsung S4 are both AC wireless compatible so I went out and got an Asus RT-AC87R router and the thing pushes over 108 Mbps at close range on both units, same speed as a wired connection, and has really good range at distance using the android WiFi analyzer app. If have been using a crippled cable modem router all this time and ripping my hair out, what is left of it. Now back to full speed ahead.
-
When you said "But, having a big base station like that would suck. It's no longer truly wireless, only partially wireless." I thought it was because I had typed out a long post about making a "base station" that would wireless link the alpha with the usb ports on the coffee table.
I removed it because I thought it was a bad idea, Would pretty much tie you to the coffee table.
EDIT. Maybe a rebranding of the roccat sova would be cool. -
I wish I had the ability to read minds, but I'd probably end up regretting it if I did.
-
So what's the deal with this Alpha? Different prices without an explanation why other that the CPU..or is that it? Who wants to wager a bet its basically the guts of the next AW14. I'm betting the GPU comes with a soldered on BGA 860m. I hope I'm wrong but it's almost obvious since there's no selection for GPU on the website.

We know almost nothing about it so far. They are being really quiet about it. I'm curious about the "custom" NVIDIA GPU as well, and what actually might mean as far as drivers are concerned. I hope it is something that can be at least updated through an INF mod. If it is so proprietary that using only the display drivers provided by Alienware is possible that could turn out to be a bad thing. I expect it will be much smaller and not very similar to the specs of the 14... maybe closer to the 13. It is so tiny that we cannot reasonably expect too much from it in terms of raw performance.
I think what might make it slightly different is the intended audience. If they are intending for it to be more like a TV-connected NVIDIA Shield competitor that is better suited for streaming from a powerhouse PC rather than trying to run stuff on its own hardware, it might be a really good product for the niche market that is actually interested in having something like that. It won't need frequent display driver updates for that. This is very different from the X51 and Alienware 13, which are designed to be compact compromises suitable for delivering an acceptable if not average gaming experience on a limited budget. Those machine are required to have at least a bare minimum of performance capability to be able to game well enough on their own power.TBoneSan likes this. -
Yea its an interesting looking PC to be sure, but I'm definitely more in the build your own segment when it comes to desktops. I would love it if they sold the case by itself but I'm sure this won't happen for multiple reasons

Oh I thought the alpha was just a steam box.. Interesting
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk -
It sort of is a variation of the Steam Box, but it will be shipping with Windows instead of SteamOS. That's actually a good thing. A Steam Box that runs SteamOS will only play Linux titles. Anything you want to run that is Windows-based will have to be streamed using a Steam Box. I think the Alpha well be an improvement on that concept because of it using Windows instead of SteamOS.

I think you're right. Hopefully they go for more than the streaming market. This $200 Zotac would be cutting their lunch if I were in the market for that kind of thing. I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Mr. Fox likes this. -
Yeah, I hope so as well. I cannot imagine that niche being large enough to justify building a dedicated platform around it, but maybe I am out of touch. The idea of streaming seems more like a geeky novelty thing to me, and not something that most serious PC gamers would be too excited about. The ability to stream the games played on a PC to a dumb monitor (TV set) or a pathetic low-powered device like a tablet or smartphone is a cool technology, but it is very difficult for me to believe people actually want to do that. I guess I have no personal frame of reference to draw from, so it is hard to find much to appreciate about the concept.
-
Streaming I feel only works well with single player games. Minor lag, using the controller, and a tv far away all gives the slight advantage to the standard pc player.
Personally I would use it for media, and for casual gaming. Nothing fast paced. -
A lot of people on the PC hardware forums I frequent are confident that its a soldered on OEM 750Ti.
Not super impressive, but alright considering the size, and it will definitely give you gaming performance on par or better than the PS4 + all the functionality of a normal PC. -
Well, I suppose if that is was a person is looking for they will probably be pretty happy.

Meh, just offer a single system with either OS as the user chooses.

I care about this !
Any news? -
I mean i care about all the new tactX and optX stuff!
I don' t care at all about the steam thing alpha -
I am hoping for a new line of Tactx products, I have been using the mice since they came out, only on my 3rd one now. An updated one (maybe even wireless) would be an instant buy for me
-
About time Alienware! I want a new TactX keyboard, my current one feels obsolete and cheap compared to what others offers for the same or for a little more $. I will gladly pay more if I see better build quality, mechanical keys, and AlienFX zones or better if its per key! Hint: Corsair K70 RGB...

I am honestly surprised AW hasn't done a TactX partnership with Razer yet. It would seem like a no brainer seeing as the two companies share a lot of the same aesthetic vision (especially in the LED department lol). Right now they're doing a special partnership with Origin PC, which ironically enough has a lot of former AW employees.
-
Personally, I'd prefer they stick with Logitech, or maybe go with Corsair. It would be cool to have an Alienware version of the upcoming K70 RGB keyboard. I like my Razer Orochi mouse OK, primarily because it is really difficult to find a good BlueTooth gaming mouse. By and large I think there are several better alternatives to Razer products out there. (I think that applies for both mice and laptops.)

The g502 has replaced my m65 on all my machines. That freaking g502 is s$&t... It the first mouse I've found that can truly replace my beloved g9.

I am also losing my Corsair M65 as well. Logitech mouse looks epic!

Okay so I got a K70 RGB keyboard
ALso the Logitech G502 mouse is epic. But I have large hands for my size and I found it do thin to hold so I got an M65 RGB as well.
Hmm Roccat, could well be a joint effort. Alienware and Roccat are doing the Sova together for the Alpha. -
I too have the 502 and love it, though I like the shape and feel of my coolermaster storm sentinal 2 much better.... I too have large hands. -

not always work out though....in the 2013 laptop lineup they use Klipsch tech on the speakers right?

Poor Foxy
Still it sounds like you had a lot of fun destroying your ear drums
Personally I can still hear lol. Although I am an 'Audiophile' At home I pump my music through a DAC from USB slot to by pass the internal sound card. Then into a headphone AMP into some Audeze LCD3's. Its expensive in fact I think I wept when I paid for the headphones. For on the go I use a USB Audioquest Dragonfly V1.2 or Meridian Explorer DAC/headphone AMP with either some Hifi-man HE-400 or AKG 550's. I have a dedicated HIFI down stairs for Music from CD's, FLAC or ALAC files.
Ever since I got into high end audio I can't stand crumby MP3's or iTunes AAC files, 16 bit CD quality is the lowest I go. Even then if I get the 24 bit studio master version I will plump for it. To be fair high end equipment simply shows up the lack of quality in MP3's anyway so there really is no point in buying them.
I haven't since bought a sound card, even for my games the DAC+AMP+headphones or DAC+AMP+Speakers (Audio engine A5+) just sounds so much better. It doesn't take a fortune either, my Dragonfly was £130 and the AKG 550's £150 so £280 for 2 award winning products! Sound card and some speakers can set you back the same.Mr. Fox likes this. -

When you say types do you mean in ear's vs over ears? Or do you mean Open back vs Closed back? Planar Magentic vs cone vs Dome. 50mm Drivers vs Smaller multiple drivers?
-
Yes when I said "types"I mean a little everything I have a Sony MDR-V55 for music Razer Electra for film alienware tactX for gaming and Razer Adaro In-Ear for For trips also I'm waiting for Sennheiser Momentum Did you ever try? Everybody is taking well about it I hope is true

The LCD series are some of the best headphones I've ever heard
But after many trials, I found the LCD-XC (or LCD-X) sounds too dark to me, and not dynamic enough to my taste
They are fantastic for some delicate vocals full of emotions though (and perhaps many more genres I'm not into)
But I listen to classical music and I love a bright, energetic sound
so I got myself a pair of beyerdynamic T1
Best headphone (for me) ever
16 bit CD is fine for me
since many records of classical music are historical
It doesn't make much sense to me listening to them in 24 bit or DSD
but of coz, mp3s are unacceptable
I converted all my CDs into level 0 flac or 16 bit wav
New tactx stuff incoming!!
