I have an Alienware Area 51 M9750 (M9700i - R1 series) and it currently has:

    Core Duo 2.33Ghz
    2x 2Gb RAM
    2 x Nvidia 8700M
    BIOS Version: V8350C03

However, I got my hands on a T9600 2.8Ghz processor recently and tried it in the system. No joy, system clicked to start, 2 secs later it would switch itself off.

The BIOS I have won't allow me to overclock my current processor, so am I stuck at 2.33Ghz?

Or is it something to do with the memory speed, motherboard? Or it just simply can't handle a 2.8Ghz chip?

Make sure you have the newest BIOS version. I had that problem with my Inspiron 1720. After I reflashed the BIOS to the newest version it worked like a charm. Hope this helps you out. Also it might not be compatible with your chipset. I'm sure some around here will know.

Sorry to bust your bubble but I think the M9750 will only support a socket M, Merom processor. The fastest socket M you can get is the t7600 @ 2.33 Ghz. The T9600 is a socket P processor and is not compatible. Somone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You're right. I had a T7600 in my E1705. That's the end of the line for that socket.

Oh well, easy mistake top make and thank goodness the T9600 was free!

That should go quite well on ebay - but what's the best thing to remove the silver heatsink gloop with?

Too bad it doesn't work in the Inspiron 1720 or I would take it off your hands :D

    Just use a damp cloth

Whipe it very good and use some alcohol to clean the oil off

M9750 uses santa rosa tech...maxx bus at 667mhz...i'm surprise that the T9600 even fit...are the pins the same?

That T7600 you have was at $750.00 when it was first release! 1st gen Core 2 Duo top of the line!
