It will be way too expensive, Have a look at the P775DM2 people are really praising that machine, No issues if one doesn't have enough cash at the moment since they can drop in upgrades later anytime, Plus it has 2 2.5" Bays & 4 RAM slots, Top notch DAC.

The bigger sli heatsink has problems with factory thermal pad I think -
Last edited: Oct 7, 2016 -
It's a bad joke on the P870DM "Grid" heatsink tbh. Clevo should spend a bit more money to get proper thermal pads rather than have users pay for their mistakes. -
In contrast, if you start with a fundamentally flawed platform there is only so much you can do with it.Last edited: Oct 7, 2016 -
Great points all around.
Something fixable is a lot better than something that is not fixable.
It's a double edged sword.
On one end we want to do the work ourselves, but on the other end Clevo should compensate for such mistakes by lowering the price within reason. Fair is fair. Of course business is business, but with the dynamics of them hanging by a string to keep lga alive, it's a very interesting cross road we're all facing right now.
The key here is having a good working base to build from...
A bga machine also needs to be repasted just as much as a clevo does. In that regard it's universal.
::iunlock:: -
But the 17/18 alienware machines have the best cooling out of the box (most of the time). -
I don't have a Clevo or Never used one, But view on them has been significantly affected from the debut of the 4790K, 6700K Clevo machines with unlocked BIOS while the 6870HK, the overvolted poorly binned CPU which is BGA & most common CPU 6700HQ (which is uber trash and awful compared the Haswell 47xxHQ) powered 2 gen Alienwares, Not only the CPU but the build quality questions based off user feedback, yep some HSs are super trash but can be fixed, Not like Alienwares where you have to teardown the whole damn machine for a repaste & a battery that is tucked away inside, I can see only regression there when comparing to the older Alienwares (2013 and Pre 2013), The PSU, BIOS fiasco and no MUX on the Alienwares from 2014 to until now, Recently they included the MUX again on the Pascal refresh but the design is still unfriendly to user for servicing. The stock paste all OEMs use is 100% trash. Period.
Now the Price to Performance ratio, Upgrade options this is not a debate to be won or a war, It's plain simple. Don't pay huge sums of cash for less user serviceable, non-socketed hardware just for the damn looks and RMA (Dell's technicians are noobest, hell every companies techs are noob while the Clevo based some resellers a.k.a Prema partnets are true enthusiasts themselves which is a huge plus when you want to make sure everything is fine at factory.
So It's the choice of the user, the options are in front of you - Blue Pill or Red Pill.
Actually there's more to say but I think this highlights the most important factors.
End of story.Last edited: Oct 8, 2016 -

pls don t generalise
if a loyal AW user sais : buy a clevo, this is something we care about.
i want to buy another alienware just because i really like graphics amplifier, but i m open to any point of view -
Peopple still comparing 2 very diffierent laptops concepts with eachother. Current Alienware laptops offerings are more aimed towards being fairly portable for the performance that they offer.
Alienware is pretty much the only laptop manufacturer out there that offers gaming laptops that can work 8 hours on battery when doing just productivity. You have some compromises but again every laptop has a few compromises. So which compromises are you willing to live with. Gain upgrade-ability but being tethered to your desk pretty much constantly or do you want to lose upgrade-ability internally (AGA works pretty well) but want to use the laptop away from a desk.
Also how important are ergonomics for you.
All things to consider, it is not a simple lets count the specs. Because if that was the case you could just build a desktop for the same amount of money and get more such as 2x1080 instead of just one.Last edited: Oct 9, 2016Rengsey R. H. Jr. and iunlock like this. -
The days of making choices based on brand are over. Doing that today is a really unintelligent approach to decision making. The concept of brand loyalty is no longer viable or reliable. It has been abused too much by companies that used to have the highest standards.

The 870 is a muuuuch thicker machine. I actually was quite shocked when i saw it in real. It didnt even fit in my backpack. That plus the huge powerbricks make it a lot less ergonomic machine. Especiallyif you use the laptop keyboard. Your hands are raised too much which makes it more tiresome.hmscott likes this. -
. Just surf quickly on all AW threads you will find the same people telling the same thing regardless of the subject.
print that in your brain : All laptops have pros and cons, there is not ONE perfect laptop, people have the right to buy an AW machine because yes they have things Clevos don't have. -
-
These people make Clevo look like a desperate company begging for customers.

At any rate, it's all about being passionate about owning the best and helping others make the most informed decisions... always has been the basis for offering suggestions. People are generally going to do what they want with the information. The important thing is making sure everyone has all of the information available to them so they don't miss something important. Not knowing that all Alienwares are BGA now is an example of that. Having only two DIMM slots is another example. That kind of information can be critical to some folks.
Hardly anything I can think of sucks as bad as spending a lot of money on something that you regret buying. Been there, done that... not much fun. -
MahmoudDewy Gaming Laptops Master Race!
This is maybe because the most active members are the ones that usually tried both sides of the equation or sometimes they are even running an AW machine but want you to get the best out of your money and they are trying to give sincere opinion. Nobody is forcing anyone to do anything, I really don't understand why these heated discussions rise out of thin air. You don't like serviceable, modding friendly, and usually big DTRs, so will be it; buy whatever makes you happy.
You like such machines and portability isn't a huge concern for you, then they introduced you to a significantly cost friendly & viable "yet not very famous" alternative that is CLEVO. I know a lot of people who has no idea what CLEVO is and they would really appreciate the freedom of having such machines even if they have to compromise in some sections, so you are doing them a favor by introducing them to the alternative.
And at the end of the day everyone will make his own choice. -
I tend to travel and game and decided I want a laptop that covers my needs:
a) power
b) sexiness/portability
c) Upgrade friendly
Now Clevo used to be A and B. Now they are just A. You can't upgrade GPU anymore. Heck, I thought my powerful Sager can be upgrade friendly in the future and unfortunately, it turns out it is not possible.
Alienware however can have the GPU upgraded by using the AGA. It's like the concept of the rumored Nintendo NX. If I go travel, I'll just lower the settings. If I am at home, I'll just connect the AGA and it can supe up the laptop. Besides, I travel so I can have time to play Street Fighter V.
So in my humble opinion, my next purchase based on my needs is the new AW 15.
Clevo and Alienware are great brands. For pure raw power and benchmarking, go for Clevo. Clevo will beat AW hands down in terms of that. In terms of aesthetics, design and portability, go for AW
I love both brands. I won't be biased about it. That's why you can't bash other previous Alienware users here because they are hardcore overclockers who knows what to do on their system.
And speaking of which, let's not bash Mr. Fox here. I am not sure if you knew him for the past few years but he is one of the best forum leaders here who will help you and answer your tech assistance needs whenever you speak to him. And when he provides his opinion, it is backed up with facts. I will defend Mr. Fox on his stance. -
Ps. The ancient Clevo P870DM1 can now be upgraded with 1070. And of course... Processor can be upgraded to Kabys lake.
eGPU is equally possible in a Clevo as with an AW BGA machine!!
And Yees, @Mr. Fox is one of the finest people on the forum. He helps everyone if they ask him. Whether they have BGA or not.temp00876, TBoneSan, Mr. Fox and 1 other person like this. -

I don't want to derail the thread but the upgrading scene is lot more than how the situation is here, Just a tip of the iceberg tbh.
Speaking of first the MSIs Promise, yeah they advertised everything about MXM modular upgrades and all used the GT72 and some other machines with that niche feature to upgrade the 880M to 980Ms for 2 Generations, Next up Clevo never advertised the same but due to their modular and highly user friendly chassis design people assumed that they would naturally. I;d skip the whole MSI fisasco as the focus is not that, but the major player here is NGreedia, Intel, Dell. Yup IMHO they are the Primary antagonists.
As we already knew Dell abandoned the FPGA market with Intel pushing them to the new Privatized Dell corp a.k.a doesn't give a jack about consumers and finalized the Alienware deal as it used to be "First few years Alienware will design the machines then later on Dell will takeover everything - 2006 to 2013, 2014 is the year Dell completely Bastardized the brand " Clevo used to partner Alienwares so they existed since the PC market flourished and they are frigging not dumb enough note this, Back then ASUS ROG machines also had proprietary MXM because of their own selfish greedy tactics while other companies used the MXM modules but later on as we know people just wanted the "crApple thin and portable fest" the Nvidia started with Optimus the first gimping arrived...and BGA hot solder was introduced by Intel with Dell starting as a major player with the Haswell HQ series chipsets, I can remember HP's Envy machines sporting the MQ CPUs till then...Dell is a major force since they owned majority of the consumer market, Dell also destroyed the Precision too in this path of Better Get Another - Hell, About Dell please check " Cass-ole's" posts on the new Gimpienware desktop HW and compare the CFM ratings / BIOS options / Mobo Power limits etc...Dell is by far the worst brand that humankind have ever witnessed, Without them Intel can't just push this BGA crapfest.
Next up was the AMD bastardization because of Intel bribing the OEMs to cut the R&D funds and bringing them to the situation they are in now restricted to the consoles, the 7970M was the last competitor card that AMD had since then nothing from the red except rebrands.
Nvidia then started to drop ball with OC blocking due to Monopolistic B$ - This dates back to those days before 347.88 drivers came and fixed the ClockBlock mess fiasco happened. In parallel with the DT GTX970 vRAM gimp, They just want to cut corners and play filthy games with consumers as they just don't think "Facebook" "crApple" "<Similar shiz - a.k.a Kool-Aid>" and bam now came the RX480 frying up the Desktop Mobos with high power draw and Nvidia 1070's Micron GDDR5 being gimped not able to OC properly and need a gimper vBIOS patch, Still now the Drivers are a MESS.
While the Notebook realm cut off starting with the 980GTX custom cards from MSI and Clevos - The first test bed & It was a huge hit since we had moar powah. But the Ngreedia took it for granted and dropped the MXM standard spec & LVDS dropping now we have all custom Core positioned MSI 1080 cards / Custom power supply cards / Custom weird shaped mxm's like the ASUSes MSI started to back off their campaign and started to damage control with the trade in program while Clevo necessarily can't push like Alienware they had to adopt nor they had the MSI's cheap tactics, But yeah they did also backstab indirectly, Since the eDP is major game changer, The MSI couldn't afford to make such huge guides to change the MXM cards while many DT owners bash the NB's and most of them don't even care...Even though Clevo's new MXM spec is being told as a standard for upcoming cards I don't just see the HBM to make it with the current HS's. Yeah the tech is significantly improving and repercussions are expected.
Yet I see Clevo as a HERO in this disastrous mess.
This is what we have finally - The consumer is crushed in between these giant corporate forces Some realize it, We just have to make sure we vote with wallet else nothing much will be left for future on the notebook enthusiast / power user stance.
Winblows X is a whole another level of MAFIA tactics from Redmond gimpster-creeps< it's not describable in a post, You'll need to go to the Windows 10 thread at the subforum to know more truth, Niantic also is no less, go to off topic forum to learn about this shady corp, About Google & Android ?
TL;DR - Just cut the bullcrap and get what you want but don't be a fool to blindly believe in these corporations just give a break and think over again, And I'll repeat socketed is not only for upgrades FFS.
Only significant backlash can move these like the NBR Rebellion against the Clockblock or the Huge money influx cut-off.Last edited: Oct 10, 2016temp00876, Rengsey R. H. Jr., Mr. Fox and 2 others like this. -
One of the reasons I got rid of all of my Alienware machines was the absence of an upgrade path. Another was a diminishing supply of replacement parts. But, they had already been through so many truly wonderful upgrades that I could not be justified in being angry or feeling slighted. I REALLY got a TON of upgrade mileage out of them... amazing products they used to make. And, there were dozens of models of laptops (including Brother @GTO_PAO11 and his P377SM) that suffered the same fate with the changes to MXM PCB sizes.
Being realistic about this we have been wanting more, and more, and more performance and now we have it. Something had to change to make room for that. It sucks that the new cards won't fit in the older machines, but the most desirable MXM GPUs available today (980 and 1080) require more power than MXM can provide without an auxiliary power source. And, they needed to make larger PCBs for now and for the future. It had to happen sooner or later. I just thank God that we still have options available with socketed desktop K CPUs and MXM slots. Otherwise, I would be so not even a tiny bit interested in owning any laptop made by anyone and would already be back to desktop PCs right now. To me, the idea of using an eGPU as a fun geeky idea for something that is already a beast without it is really attractive. However, any kind of reliance on the eGPU for graphics performance and future upgrades is something that turns me off in a big way. It's more like a crutch than a secret weapon or an extra special play toy gadget in that scenario.Last edited: Oct 10, 2016temp00876, Awhispersecho, MahmoudDewy and 5 others like this. -

. I just have the feeling that some previous AW owners are REALLY frustrated because of the controversial directions AW has taken in the past few years and are going wild on the AW threads, moderators have to frequently clean the AW forums because of that, and that is also a fact
.
I like Clevos but like you said, they have pros and cons just like AW, so people are allowed to enjoy modern AW without getting yelled at.
Again Mr. Fox is awesome and I know that but please please go easy on 'bga or not upgradeable' laptops, everything he says is not made to troll/anger, he's just giving his opinion and trying to raise awareness on what he feels is a real injustice in the laptop industry (BGA, MXM dropped, no more upgrades etc.) but again..you are REALLY frustrated with Alienware buddy ^^.
My point of view on the matter is the following :
the real injustice is the F.ing price and the availability of MXM graphic cards and laptop CPUs (i know that they have socketed desktop cpus for laptops but they heat more and make the barebone thicker) ) !!!! If I'd be angry I'd be angry at that ! I remember the 980M was at 750+ euros on ebay when it was released.
So for me after two years, selling my AW and buying a new one cost slightly more than buying a new MXM. without forgetting that the new barebone has new features, a new screen etc.
so that's my honest point of view on the matter.Last edited: Oct 11, 2016 -
I also have to be honest with my friends, and I would be lying if I did not admit that my deepest heartfelt wish is for great harm to fall on the OEMs that do not offer any acceptable modular options for people with my interests. They should all be ashamed of offering nothing but BGA options and I think that brands that do this deserve to die. Just my opinion, and I hope the expression of my opinion facilitates their demise. I express these opinions everywhere, not just in Alienware forums. Here, Tech|Inferno, YouTube... everywhere... MSI, ASUS, Aorus, Acer, Razer and the inferior BGA Clevos are all subject to my incessant expressions of ridicule.
What I am trying to say is, I love you guys like brothers and friends, and want only the best for you even if we don't see eye-to-eye about BGA. I mean that with all sincerity.temp00876, Awhispersecho, Papusan and 2 others like this.
