Hi Guys. I am about to buy a new M17x with all the trimmings due to waiting about two months for a refund because as usual Dell sent me a piece of junk XPS1730 and I notice that blu ray isn't an option for optical disk choice anymore. Anyone else getting that because I don't understand why Dell would offer blu ray as one of the main stay options then just stop offering it with out any explanation.

*EDIT* Sorry I mean M17x in the title.

Wow thanks a lot witcher! This is just a reader though, do you think the blu ray burner is really worth it now? I am trying to make this M17x as future proof as possible but I don't burn a lot of optical disks.

I don't see any reason to get blu ray in your laptop at all. Perhaphs if future games are going to be burned on blu ray discs, but I think thats still going to take a while.

Ok, thanks for the advice. The main reason I wanted to try one was just to see what a blu ray movie would look like on the M17x. I don't really rent movies or anything like that so maybe it really isn't worth it.

    Hi DellSuxForever! (Nice name ^^)
I got the blu-ray on mine, and I can say the blu-ray movies when played on the 'better than HD' screen do look nice, but my general opinion of HD is...its totally over-rated! Its not that different from normal DVDs, the images are just a bit sharper.
It is a shame you cant get the Blu-Ray drive on your M17x order, but it really is not too big a loss :)

What? are you joking? HD Movies (To clarify Bluray is HD) are night and day when compared to 480p DVD.... it's like saying games on 640x480 is the same as 1200x1024.......

If you are into movies/sports or TV there's no way you can even compare HD with 480p, I wouldn't have bought my M17x without the Bluray player, but I can understand when people say it's not a must, I've only watch 6-7 movies in 4 months... however i love having the option.

I would agree. But it does depend on the size of your screen too.

Sports on 1080p are just fantastic.

Indeed high Def movies look awesome but I see litle point in watching HD on such a small screen. Rather buy a Hd player for your tv then.

I got a blu-ray burner to burn movies so I can watch them on the big screen, although i watched a movie yesterday on the M17X (since I'm in Iraq, no big screen) and it looked awesome.

Right agree, however the screen size is relevant to the viewing distance.... in otherwords, viewing a HD picture one feet away from a 17-inch Monitor is probably just as good if not better than a 50-inch at 12-13 feet.... there's a nice chart/converter somewhere on-line.

Seriously, Bluray movies on the M17x screen with PowerDVD Ultra look fregging awesome, pair that up with a nice sorround sound headset like the AK-R8 or the A40 and you got yourself a very nice portable Home theater system (as good as portable gets) + all the goods of an M17x ;)

I watch blueray on my M15x it is super sweet with the 1080 screen, the pixel density is so much better than a 1080 big screen. Just love watching movies when traveling but at home I still use my big screen. To have blueray as a choice is nice.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I will go ahead and buy one of the drives from the ebay link that witcher provided. I don't think I will be needing to burn any blu ray disks so I should be fine with just a reader.

I was thinking I could just quickly pop-out the DVD burner and put the new
blu-ray drive in, even though this is a slot loaded drive.

To replace the DVD drive with a Blu-ray drive you practically have to dismantle the whole computer.

Yeah I wouldn't worry too much about it, just get an external Bluray player if you must have one and already ordered your M17x
