I'm exploring a lot of options for high-end computers right now, and a couple of manufacturers offer the option of no OS and barebones RAM in their systems. As I already own an OS, and would like to buy the RAM myself, is there a way I can convince a sales rep to take the OS and RAM off entirely?

Today has set me off looking for an improvement on a Sager from XoticPC, and nothing else seems to come close. With student discounts and haggling, though, Alienware still stands a chance.

Firstly, welcome to NBR! - Take a brief moment to familiarise yourself with forum rules when you have the time!

If you are buying direct from Dell, they don't do any barebones stuff....you would have to buy with an OS and base level ram.

If you are in the US or Canada, have a look at this thread as Dell are proactively discounting/promoting sales of Alienware here on NBR, officially.

The only thing dell sells that is a "bare bones" type of system is some of their servers. But, they wont help you very much.

For the OS, you can go with what is commonly known as a "Windows refund" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_refund). Regarding the RAM, though, you are out of luck. Just go with the cheapest option, which is likely a difference of around 40-50$ off of the configuration price. Good luck!

That refund seems painful, but maybe I could sell the key+DVD and use the money to buy an upgrade disc.

Thanks for the sales rep thread, Stevie. I'll check that out.

No problem, Jergling - I reckon the AW/Dell guys over there should be able to save you a few $$$
